a 2022世界杯32强预选赛 initiative performed in the community of cedar rapids identified a critical need for better connections and smoother traffic flow between the kingston village neighborhood and the downtown district. additionally, the initiative focused on 2022世界杯32强预选赛 aesthetic enhancements that would promote connections between neighborhoods and regions within the city while preserving each area’s distinct characteristics. to start this endeavor, the snyder & associates team designed several projects to revitalize the first avenue and 6th street corridors, facilitating new development and enhanced safety features for the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 .

improving connectivity, safety, resiliency & sustainability

the construction of a new arterial street joining ellis boulevard and 6th street aims to enhance overall connectivity within the downtown. the new street introduces two new roundabouts along with additional safety enhancements. the design for converting the traditional intersections into roundabouts was carefully planned to fit within the existing right-of-way and city-owned property. this approach minimized disruptions to current features such as sidewalks, landscaping, and nearby commercial buildings. it also eliminated the need for the city to acquire additional property and maximized the potential for future redevelopment.

roundabouts streamline traffic flow with efficient traffic circulation

the addition of roundabouts decreases travel times, resulting in less time spent in vehicles for drivers and reduced emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment and enhancing safety. research indicates that roundabouts generally offer greater safety than traditional four-way stops or signalized intersections. collaborating with the city, our engineers provided documentation illustrating how roundabout designs could enhance safety, leading to the city being awarded traffic safety improvement program (tsip) funding for the project.

the 1st avenue rehabilitation project incorporated additional safety enhancements, including reconfigured travel lanes and raised median layouts to bolster traffic safety and regulate access to potential activity hubs. this effort encompassed milling existing pavement, applying an asphalt overlay, installing new pavement markings and signage, reconstructing accessible pedestrian sidewalk ramps, and replacing traffic signal equipment along the corridor.

the 1st avenue w stretch of roadway from cedar river to 6th street and the new connection from 6th street to ellis boulevard are vital arterial corridors within cedar rapids. extending these streets is anticipated to stimulate investment in the neighborhood severely affected by floods in 2008.

a notable surge in investment interest is evident, as plans for the new 1st and 1st development projects have been unveiled and are well underway. this initiative aims to enhance attractions and amenities in the western downtown cedar rapids area. it includes a hotel, residential options, the pickle palace pickleball court, a restaurant, and a big grove brewing establishment.

working together as a team

1st ave & 6th street intersection facing north before & after construction

planners labeled this project as “complex” due to its multifaceted nature, which included several key components: reconstructing 6th street nw and ellis boulevard nw, creating a new corridor between these two streets, constructing new roundabouts in place of traditional intersections, increasing safety measures at railroad crossings, replacing traffic signals at multiple intersections, and implementing enhancements to a ramp on interstate 380. 2022世界杯32强预选赛 for these projects necessitated extensive communication with various stakeholders, including community leaders, the iowa department of transportation (dot), the union pacific railroad (uprr), developers, business owners, church leaders, utility owners, the flood control system design team, and residents and business owners in the project vicinity.

looking ahead, cedar rapids anticipates a promising era of growth and progress in the downtown region driven by the revitalization efforts spurred by this initiative. with a steadfast focus on resilience in overcoming past challenges, the city is poised to address the deficiencies in its infrastructure and cultivate vibrant spaces that promote connectivity and prosperity for all its residents.

access management roadway construction

raised medians throughout the corridor create a safer environment for all motorists.

in the heart of unincorporated polk county, a bustling two-lane corridor known as us highway 69 (ne 14th street) has long been a critical lifeline connecting des moines with the thriving suburb of ankeny. this vital artery bears a load of up to 11,000 vehicles daily, but as the years roll on, it is anticipated to accommodate a staggering 24,000 cars each day by the year 2050. to meet this growing traffic demand, the snyder & associates team was tasked by the iowa department of transportation (dot) with developing a plan for the reconstruction of a three-mile stretch of us 69, transforming it from a two-lane rural roadway into a modern, four-lane divided urban thoroughfare.

the land that flanks this corridor is a diverse tapestry of commercial enterprises, industrial hubs, and residential neighborhoods. the plan includes six strategically placed signalized intersections, enhancing convenience and safety for commuters navigating this bustling stretch of road. this monumental undertaking, which commenced in 2021, has already achieved remarkable milestones as it wraps up in 2023.

revolutionized roadway reconstruction: static lidar scanning ensured precision and safety

innovation has often paved the way for progress, and the us 69 reconstruction project was no exception. at its core, the project’s success story began with our team’s implementation of cutting-edge surveying techniques that guaranteed precision and prioritized the safety of those who worked on-site.

lidar image of a street for transportation construction purposes.

the highly detailed lidar image ensured the new roadway aligned with the existing pavement.

the project team fully utilized static lidar scanning. by harnessing the power of lasers and advanced sensors, lidar creates a highly detailed, 3d representation of the environment, in this case, the existing roadway pavement of us highway 69. static lidar scanning captured a comprehensive, high-resolution dataset of the roadway, leaving no room for guesswork. this precise information served as the cornerstone for the entire reconstruction project. it also ensured that the new four-lane divided urban roadway aligned flawlessly with the existing pavement, guaranteeing a seamless transition and a road that meets the iowa dot’s quality standards.

safety is paramount in any construction endeavor, and static lidar scanning has transformed safety protocols. traditional surveying methods often necessitate surveyors to physically enter the work zone, exposing them to the risks inherent in high-traffic construction areas. however, static lidar scanning has eliminated this need. surveyors can remain safe from the active construction site while the technology does the heavy lifting. this revolutionary approach not only safeguards the well-being of the surveying team but also contributes to the project’s overall efficiency, as there is less downtime due to safety concerns.

access control evolution: transforming us highway 69 for enhanced traffic flow and safety

few endeavors in the ambitious landscape of roadway reconstruction are as multifaceted and pivotal as enhancing access control along a bustling corridor like us highway 69. at the heart of this reconstruction project was a fundamental objective—to redefine access management. this undertaking encompassed the careful reconfiguration and consolidation of numerous commercial and residential access points, representing a vital step towards achieving the project’s overarching goals of improved traffic flow, enhanced safety, and capacity expansion to accommodate the corridor’s ever-growing demands.

access management, often called the art of controlling entry, exit, and cross traffic along a roadway, is a crucial facet of modern transportation engineering. in the case of the us 69 reconstruction project, the existing corridor consisted of a web of access points that had evolved, contributing to congestion, delays, and safety concerns. businesses and residences along the corridor required convenient access, but the existing layout challenged efficiency and safety.

our project team embarked on a meticulous access point relocation and consolidation process to address these challenges head-on. this multifaceted endeavor involved a comprehensive assessment of the corridor’s existing access points, considering proximity to intersections, traffic volume, and safety implications. commercial entrances, driveways, and residential access points were strategically repositioned to optimize traffic flow and minimize conflict points.

this project exemplifies the delicate balance between accessibility and efficiency that characterizes modern roadway engineering. while the project aimed to optimize traffic flow and enhance safety, it also recognized the importance of maintaining access for businesses and residents. through careful 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and collaboration with stakeholders, the project achieved a harmonious blend of accessibility and efficiency, ensuring that the corridor remains a vital conduit for the community.

leveraging cutting-edge technology

additionally, this project harnessed the full potential of bentley open roads software to create this transformative corridor. this powerful software served as the digital backbone of the project, transcending the boundaries of traditional design and ushering in a new era of precision and efficiency. the software allowed our design team to develop a dynamic blueprint that guided automated machine guidance during grading and paving. moreover, it served as an analytical laboratory, offering a platform for in-depth design analysis, where every component, contour, and dimension could be scrutinized to perfection.

seamless staging: navigating progress smoothly through us 69 reconstruction

finally, a meticulously crafted staging plan was devised to maintain traffic flow throughout construction. this intricate plan ensured commuters could navigate the corridor safely and efficiently during construction, minimizing disruptions to their daily routines.

the us 69 reconstruction project has been more than just a roadway overhaul — it has been a testament to innovation, collaboration, and foresight. as the corridor has evolved into a four-lane urban roadway, it is now poised to meet the ever-growing transportation needs of the ankeny area, laying the foundation for a brighter, more accessible future.

in the heart of fort dodge, tucked away behind the buildings lining central avenue between ninth and 12th streets, lies the canvas for an ambitious project — the fort dodge alleyways three-block master plan. this endeavor sets its sights on breathing new life into several forgotten alleyways, transforming them into vibrant, safe, and inviting spaces. main street fort dodge, a volunteer organization focused on 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 -private partnerships, turned to the professionals with snyder & associates to develop the concept that could gain 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 support and bring this project to reality. the goal was clear: reimagining these neglected areas into engaging hubs that foster social interaction, showcase local artistry, and create a unique experience for residents and visitors alike.

designing for diversity & inclusivity

at its core, this initiative streetscape design seeks inclusivity. the project strives to be a melting pot of community engagement by targeting not just a specific demographic but aiming to draw in residents, tourists, local businesses, and anyone frequenting fort dodge’s downtown area. by integrating elements like seating arrangements, pedestrian-friendly walkways, lush green spaces, captivating art installations, and thoughtful lighting, our team developed a design to make these alleys welcoming environments for people of all ages and backgrounds.

inspirations & aesthetic innovations

drawing inspiration from successful alley revitalization projects in cities such as fort collins and denver, the fort dodge alleyways project is a marriage of modern urban design principles and a deep appreciation for the city’s historical architecture. the resultant design theme combines contemporary aesthetics with elements that pay homage to fort dodge’s rich heritage. a fusion of diverse materials, a palette of vibrant colors, and a mix of textures were brought together to create an immersive and visually appealing design plan.

one standout feature of the revitalization effort’s design is the introduction of green walls. these lush vertical gardens will elevate the visual appeal of the alleys and contribute to a healthier urban environment by improving air quality. complementing this green landscape, adequate space for food trucks adds a culinary dimension to the alley experience, infusing the ambiance with an inviting and festive spirit.

historical homage and functional artistry

improvements for merrill alley include a large shade structure that will provide patrons with shelter and create a visual landmark.

among the alleys proposed for transformation, merrill alley takes center stage, paying homage to fort dodge’s aviation legacy. an overhead shade structure adorned with a striking monoplane silhouette will stand tall at the alley’s entrance. inspired by c.c. merrill’s pioneering aviation spirit, this structure can serve as a sheltered walkway for pedestrians and a visual landmark. its perforated metal panels create daytime shadows, while at night, integrated led lighting transforms the alley into a captivating setting — a blend of historical homage and contemporary allure.

weaving narratives through design

the seamless integration of historical elements with modern amenities defines the essence of the alleyway’s proposed design. the marriage of the monoplane shade structure, reminiscent neon-style signage, and contemporary features like art installations and green spaces crafts a tapestry that tells fort dodge’s story. these alleys cease to be mere thoroughfares; they metamorphose into living canvases that encapsulate the city’s evolution — filled with the charm of a time long ago yet surging with a vibrant modernness that inspires community spirit.

the fort dodge alleyways three-block master plan reflects the city’s dedication to rejuvenating urban areas into culturally vibrant spaces. it invites everyone to explore the revitalized pathways, appreciate curated artworks, and engage with the rich narrative woven through these transformed alleys.

nearly two decades ago, planners for linn county and several surrounding communities — including cedar rapids, hiawatha, and marion — began laying the groundwork for an east/west crosstown route along the northern edge of the cedar rapids metro area. stretching from interstate 380 in the west to highway 13 in the east, the tower terrace road corridor was the preferred option to provide access to an area with a projected population growth of 40,000 by 2040. a significant piece of this northern connector was recently realized with the upgrades to the i-380 interchange and the extensive roadway improvements on both sides of the interchange.

the new interchange was reconfigured to a diverging diamond interchange (ddi) formation to improve efficiency and safety. working in conjunction with the interchange design group, the iowa dot, and multiple jurisdictions, the team from snyder & associates was chosen to design the critical roadway elements on either side of the interchange to ensure a smooth and safe transition for motorists.

west side roadway improvements

on the west side of the interchange, our group was tasked with developing designs to reconstruct tower terrace road from 1,000 feet west of miller road to the i-380 interchange. this included updating the roadway from a rural section to an urban section with pedestrian accommodations.

staging for the project construction was critical for maintaining access to nearby homeowners and a busy commercial business on the south side of the roadway. our team designed a temporary access road along the south side of the street between miller road and twisters gymnastics to maintain access during construction. on the north side of the roadway, a temporary entrance and gapped paving were used to support access to an impacted homeowner. in addition to coordinating with the numerous utility conflicts in the project area, we devised a plan for temporary drainage during the staged construction to alleviate stormwater concerns.

during design, our team continuously contacted the idot’s consulting engineer for the ddi portion of the project to ensure our design matched the interchange tie-ins. we also prompted numerous design team meetings with the idot to ensure seamless project coordination.

east side roadway upgrades

north center point road traffic transitions into the roundabout at tower terrace road.

to the east of the interchange, constructing a roundabout at the north center point road intersection was a critical infrastructure upgrade to improve efficiency for drivers near the new ddi interchange. this joint project between hiawatha and the iowa dot was also constructed concurrently with the interchange.

the roadway upgrades include a 4-lane section with a sidewalk on the north and a 10-foot-wide trail on the south side just east of the interchange. the roundabout was designed with a single through lane for north and southbound traffic, dedicated eastbound and westbound right turn lanes, and two through lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic. the design and construction allow for the future addition of another northbound and southbound lane without requiring reconstruction or road closures. our team’s design also alleviated environmental concerns relating to the tower terrace mobile home park adjacent to the new section of the roadway.

as with the west side improvements, extensive coordination meetings with the dot’s consulting engineer were initiated to ensure interchange project alignments and profiles matched. we also designed the west and east side improvement projects to be a “mandatory tie” with the i-380 interchange project. this allowed all three projects to be completed under the same contract and timeline, saving the client money through a larger-scoped project that attracted a large pool of contractors.

tower terrace road stands to become an essential commercial corridor that will promote sustainable development and help the surrounding communities become more vibrant. with a considerable piece of this northern connector now open, this long-planned objective may be realized sooner than expected. the snyder & associates team has also been active with other sections of this vital corridor connection. it looks forward to providing services to all agencies and communities involved in bringing this extensive project to a successful conclusion.

the exponential growth of communities, particularly in the western suburbs of des moines, has been nothing short of remarkable. the population of waukee, for example, more than tripled between 2000 and 2020. as these communities flourished, so did the demand for transportation infrastructure, leading to increased traffic congestion and a surge in traffic-related incidents.

in response to these pressing challenges, the iowa dot joined forces with snyder & associates, a trusted traffic and roadway improvements partner, to evaluate and propose practical solutions. the objective was to enhance the transportation network along the u.s. highway 6 corridor, which stretches westward from the interstate 35/80 service interchange.

interchange justification report leads to diverging diamond interchange recommendation

the snyder & associates team created an interchange justification report (ijr) that was crucial in this process by providing a comprehensive framework for meeting the fhwa’s criteria. given the challenges presented by the developed land and environmentally sensitive areas surrounding the interchange, multiple alternatives were explored. these alternatives ranged from expanding the existing diamond interchange to converting it into a tight diamond, single-point urban, or a diverging diamond interchange (ddi).

rendering of diverging diamond interchange at hickman road and interstate 35/80.

the diverging diamond interchange at hickman road and interstate 35/80 will drastically reduce the traffic conflict points.

after careful analysis, the diverging diamond interchange emerged as the preferred option. snyder & associates traffic engineers determined it best aligned with the project’s criteria. the ddi interchange is a type of interchange that can improve safety and traffic flow by eliminating the need for left turns across opposing traffic. in a ddi interchange, traffic briefly crosses over to the opposite side of the road before merging back onto the original side.

“the new ddi interchange will be a major improvement for safety and traffic flow at this busy interchange,” said snyder & associates project manager nathan carhoff. “the ddi design eliminates the need for left turns across opposing traffic, which is a major cause of crashes at interchanges.”

expanding trail accommodations: enhancing accessibility

this project area contains one of the busiest segments of interstate highway in the state of iowa. i-35/80 between douglas and university carries over 125,000 vehicles per day, with projections for traffic to grow to over 185,000 vehicles per day by 2050, creating a dangerous barrier between the communities of clive and urbandale. regionally, hickman road also carries more east-west traffic from one side of the interstate to the other than any other roadway in the metro. currently, hickman road carries approximately 40,000 vehicles per day along this corridor, with projections for traffic to grow to over 60,000 vehicles per day by 2050.

providing a safe barrier between pedestrians and bicyclists is critical for encouraging non-motorized transportation options and allowing for safe recreational opportunities for residents of all abilities. to that end, the construction of several new trail sections is included in the project. the first trail section is a 2,200-foot-long, ten-foot-wide, pcc pedestrian trail connection that will begin on the east side of the lifetime fitness entrance off hickman road. the trail will turn a loop approximately 500 feet to the east to accommodate elevation change. it will move south via a grade-separated underpass tunnel to safely carry pedestrians and bicyclists under the busy hickman road corridor. turning back to the east and south, the trail will run parallel to the southbound i-35/80 entrance ramp and connect with the clive greenbelt trail near walnut creek.

rendering of pedestrian bridge over interstate onramp.

two pedestrian bridges over the interstate onramps will add a multi-modal component to the new interchange.

the next trail section will begin on the north side of hickman road at the grade-separated tunnel entrance. it will continue to the east, crossing the southbound interstate exit ramp via a pedestrian bridge. the trail’s path will pass beneath the interstate using a grade-separated underpass tunnel and continue over the northbound entrance ramp via another pedestrian bridge. ultimately, the trail will extend east, connecting with a local trail and sidewalk network near nw 111th street.

when complete, this new grade-separated connection will bridge a much-needed gap in the area trail network, providing users with undisturbed access to the raccoon river valley trail and the clive greenbelt trail that collectively tie thousands of residential homes and hundreds of area businesses together, along with dozens of parks and recreational areas — all with minimal to no interaction between trail users and the heavy hickman road and interstate 35/80 traffic.

these trail accommodations align with the project’s broader goals of enhancing accessibility and promoting alternative modes of transportation within the community. they are planned for construction concurrently with the interchange upgrades, demonstrating a holistic approach to transportation infrastructure development.

enhanced stormwater management 2022世界杯32强预选赛

the quality of life for users and aquatic life will also be improved by incorporating numerous stormwater management elements to help control and clean up the added runoff associated with the additional pavement areas. most improvements drain to walnut creek located just south of hickman road. this urban stream takes on stormwater runoff from thousands of developed lots within the western suburbs of des moines, so any additional pavements contribute to higher runoff volumes and quicker discharges to the stream. with faster overland flow, many sediments and water contaminants are also carried within those waters, further damaging the streams and affecting the natural habitat for residents, fish, and plant life.

to address these additional runoff concerns, stormwater within the project area will be treated via grass swales with a rock infiltration sub-base installed in the drainageways. these improvements will promote stormwater infiltration into the ground, and gabions installed at strategic locations will slow the water further, encouraging groundwater infiltration and reducing erosion. other areas of the project will be treated using bioretention cells. these cells will be located within the median islands of the interchange.

all stormwater management features are designed based on city requirements for recharge and water quality volume. this infrastructure will eliminate damage to property and the environment by reducing, slowing, and controlling the flow of stormwater runoff. properly managed streams and natural waterways enhance the community’s natural beauty, increasing community pride, and helping make it a place where people want to live, work, and recreate.

moving traffic safety forward: a safer and more efficient corridor

rendering of the new interchange looking to the northwest.

as the project to revamp the i-35/80 & u.s. 6 interchange progresses into the construction phase, it promises safer and more efficient transportation for the communities of the des moines metro area. with careful 2022世界杯32强预选赛 , adherence to fhwa standards, and a commitment to addressing the region’s evolving needs, this transformative initiative is well on its way to becoming a reality. stay tuned for further updates as we witness the continued evolution of this vital transportation corridor.

for several years, the cedar falls community has been expanding its transportation network along the southern edge of town, including the greenhill road corridor. this work was completed to accommodate new commercial and residential development in the area and to provide commuters with another route through town. piggybacking on the success of the traffic study that resulted in the greenhill road improvements, our team was again tasked with improving the cedar heights drive corridor, extending south from greenhill road to the viking road intersection.

before reconstruction, the existing cedar heights drive corridor consisted of a two-lane rural section that was a main thoroughfare for commuters and a primary access route to the john deere facility on the south side of town. this comprehensive project included reconstructing the entire roadway to a three-lane urban section (with a two-way, left-turn lane), adding an extensive storm sewer system, building a trail, and extending the sanitary sewer and water main.

roundabouts smooth out traffic flow, increase safety

beginning at the greenhill road intersection, this project converted the existing signalized intersection to a multi-lane roundabout configuration. the existing t-intersection was converted to a single-lane roundabout at the huntington road intersection. additionally, a truck apron and landscape features were added to the viking road roundabout at the south end of the project zone. the use of roundabouts will drastically improve the traffic flow along the corridor and increase safety.

these improvements significantly impacted the cedar heights drive and greenhill road areas. the cedar heights drive reconstruction south from the intersection with viking road and north past the intersection with greenhill road, along with the construction of the roundabouts, was divided into two segments, beginning with the greenhill road roundabout. this staging effort allowed traffic access at the huntington road intersection while work was performed to the north.

in addition to the roadway reconstruction and widening, this project also saw the construction of a recreational trail running adjacent to the roadway, a new water main, sanitary sewer main, and storm sewer main were included from the east viking road roundabout north and east through the intersection of east greenhill road.

stormwater analysis drives new sewer system

traffic was temporarily rerouted to accommodate the reconstruction efforts.

an extensive stormwater analysis revealed the need for a new storm sewer system to meet sudas standards. one portion of the new roadway included a boulevard section, which limited the pavement area available for stormwater conveyance while maintaining an open lane for travel during runoff events. this area required additional intakes to meet the design requirements. various intake types and pipe materials were reviewed to optimize capture rates and reduce project costs. this required appropriate storm sewer intakes and pipe sizes to minimize the runoff spread on the arterial roadway. the stormwater improvements included dozens of new intakes and thousands of feet of storm sewer.

our team was also instrumental in this project, receiving numerous funding sources, including iowa department of transportation (dot) federal-aid swap funds, traffic safety improvement program (tsip) funds, and multiple local funding sources to implement these improvements.

the cedar heights drive reconstruction project has significantly improved the transportation network in cedar falls. with the expansion of the roadway to a three-lane urban section, the addition of storm sewers, recreational trails, and extensions of water and sewer mains, this project has enhanced the area’s infrastructure for both commuters and residents. roundabouts have greatly improved traffic flow and increased safety along the corridor. this project was successful due to the collaborative efforts of the cedar falls community, our team, and the multiple funding sources that supported the initiative.

while the main street parkade renovations in recent years have been taking center stage in cedar falls, the upgrades to nearby peter melendy park and the surrounding riverfront area have substantially impacted the downtown. as the lead design firm for the parkade improvements, our team was also tasked with upgrading and improving the aesthetics of these adjacent community areas.

peter melendy park sits between the main street parkade, 1st street, and the cedar river on a one-acre, triangle-shaped parcel of land. the park provides direct access to the riverside trail and the cedar valley lakes trail on the other side of the river and is home to the “gateway to the trails” sculpture. the city had recently completed a floodwall and levee improvement project along the riverbank in peter melendy park, and with these recent infrastructure improvements in place, city and community leaders further desired to enhance the park and river area for residents and visitors.

peter melendy renovation efforts drive riverfront upgrades

our team provided a conceptual master plan and final design that guided renovations at peter melendy park. our plans incorporated many of the same streetscape features planned or used along the nearby cedar falls main street parkade project. these renovations included removing nearly 500 square yards of concrete sidewalks and replacing them with a colorful assortment of brick pavers to mimic the parkade sidewalks. the permeable paver design will also help the location with stormwater drainage.

using clay pavers will significantly increase the longevity and durability of the project.

for this project, clay pavers made of natural materials were chosen even though the initial material cost was more than the alternative concrete pavers. the clay pavers have a consistent color throughout and do not fade over time. they resist many environmental factors and have a higher compressive strength than concrete. pavers with chamfered edges were also specified to allow for minor variations in surface elevation. this reduces tripping hazards, helps maintain ada compliance, and makes snow removal easier.

the extensive master plan included numerous new tree plantings and sodding, hardscape amenities, new park wayfinding signage, permanent benches, and convenient bike racks.

river place plaza sidewalk connection

around the bend from peter melendy park, the river place plaza was a private, yet related, project that helped revitalize and redevelop an adjacent portion of the downtown and the river place neighborhood. our team worked with the city and other groups to provide a connection to their river walk system, the downtown businesses, and new development features. we strove to tie the traditional and contemporary blend of hardscape and streetscape components into the east 2nd street area, from main to state street. the project updates included the replacement of all sidewalks with pavers and ada upgrades. not only are the pedestrian travel paths no longer concrete, but the detectable warnings also utilize clay pavers.

the peter melendy park and the surrounding riverfront area in cedar falls have undergone substantial upgrades to enhance the downtown area’s aesthetic appeal. as the lead design firm for the parkade renovations, our team also upgraded peter melendy park with brick pavers, new trees and sodding, hardscape amenities, park wayfinding signage, permanent benches, and bike racks. the river place plaza project also received upgrades, including replacing all sidewalks with pavers and ada upgrades. clay pavers were chosen for both projects due to their consistent color, environmental resistance, and higher compressive strength than concrete. these renovations provide a revitalized and connected space for residents and visitors.

the snyder & associates team performed a traffic study and provided streetscape design services for the city of fort dodge, which investigated the creation of a continuous corridor that connects the west side of town with the east side, allowing the downtown business district to serve the entire community better. numerous alternative routes were developed, and different intersection treatments were evaluated as part of this traffic analysis. ultimately, our team advocated for creating the cross-town connector along 1st avenue south, which included the construction of two roundabout intersections and removing 13 traffic signals. during the upgrade process, the overhead utility infrastructure was buried along the corridor to improve the aesthetic appeal and provide better pedestrian accommodation within the narrow rights-of-way. this corridor transformation significantly improved the operations of the local street network.

roundabouts provide ideal environment for gateway features

along with the roadway improvements, our team also coordinated the addition of gateway features at both roundabout locations to enhance the corridor’s aesthetic character further. at the 1st avenue south and south 6th street roundabout, our team developed plans for installing metal banners affixed to tall poles. these decorative metal banners were chosen for their attractiveness and durability. the banners can also be easily changed for seasonal displays or special promotions.

sculpture at night time

the metal banners are displayed at the 1st avenue south and south 6th street roundabout locations.

further east along the corridor at 1st avenue south and south 12th street, a 32-foot-tall clock tower was positioned in the roundabout’s center. our team created plans for this impressive structure and used 3d modeling software to review several different design options for the client. our designers also used the software to position the clock tower for the best and most effective vantage point for drivers and pedestrians to achieve maximum exposure to the clock’s four faces.

at both roundabout locations, low brick pedestals help create a visual tie between the historical brick structures downtown and the more modern banners and clock tower. they also help provide a backdrop for accent plantings and lighting features. site-specific plant material and complete irrigation systems were also included to reduce maintenance requirements.

city leaders wanted to install gateway markers at the entry points to the downtown region for many years. considering their popularity with residents, more features are planned at other locations as streetscape improvements continue.

upgraded streetscape & improved mobility key to corridor plan

illustration of proposed alburnett corridor alignment in marion, ia

located northeast of cedar rapids, the city of marion has experienced steady growth for more than three decades. this increase in population has had a direct impact on business and industry in the area, as well. faced with the need to accommodate the increasing multi-modal traffic, marion city leaders identified the extension of alburnett road on the west edge of town as an important capital improvement project for the continued development and growth of the community.

the general alignment for the proposed roadway extension was established by a feasibility study conducted in 2000. the goal was to connect the residential areas on the north side of town to the business and downtown districts at the south end of the city. in 2016, city leaders tasked snyder & associates with reviewing the details of the previous alignment, determining if any modifications were needed, and providing a detailed corridor plan.

our design team planned the extension as a minor arterial street under the transportation & circulation plan adopted by the city in 2010. the basic roadway design and cross-section were created to incorporate the policies and visions of the plan including inviting streetscape features, the accommodation of future growth through vehicular and pedestrian linkages, and a well-landscaped atmosphere to maintain the neighborhood’s unique identity.

beyond providing a north/south corridor for future traffic growth, another project goal is to reduce traffic cutting through residential neighborhoods, namely on 10th street between 7th avenue and boyson road. trail and bike users will also benefit from the plan, as well as emergency vehicles.

reports, surveys & analysis target traffic congestion reductions & quality of life improvements

the snyder & associates team began their analysis of the design concept by performing an initial environmental evaluation of the proposed alburnett road extension project area. they were then able to prepare an environmental evaluation report for submission to the city’s engineers. the environmental evaluation report consisted of several studies performed or administered by our team, including:

  • wetland delineation
  • archaeological survey & geomorphological analysis
  • architectural history survey
  • geotechnical engineering report

as part of the design concept process, snyder & associates also completed a traffic study for the proposed alburnett road extension. the purpose of this study was to determine the capacity, functional geometry, and traffic control needs for the intersections along the project corridor. the study included traffic forecasts, intersection capacity analysis, traffic signal warrant analysis, analysis of possible roundabouts, and recommendations.

based on traffic projections and analyses performed, it was determined the alburnett road extension should be constructed as a three-lane roadway with one lane in each direction and a continuous center left-turn lane. dedicated left-turn lanes and traffic signals should also be implemented at select intersections.

since a portion of the newly extended corridor will run through parks and residential neighborhoods, it was also recommended speed limits be sufficiently controlled for the safety of residents, pedestrians, park visitors, and drivers. a speed limit of 35 mph was deemed appropriate for this minor arterial that will serve commuter traffic traveling to specific destinations, as well as local traffic traveling to and from work, school, and shops.

multi-modal accommodations & stormwater management

willow park was identified as an ideal trailhead location.

as previously mentioned, parks, nature trails, and walkable amenities are located in the region of the alburnett road extension project. to accommodate multi-modal transportation and persons of varying abilities, multiple outlets are proposed, including trailhead connections, sidewalk and multi-use side paths, on-street bike lanes, and accessible sidewalk ramps at all intersections.

due to its proximity to the proposed trail, willow park was identified as an ideal trailhead location for the community. the park currently has an existing restroom facility, as well as a small parking lot, both necessary elements for the trailhead. with the proposed alburnett road corridor splitting the park into two sections, connections across the roadway would be an important aspect in the revitalization of the park. landscape buffers are proposed along this portion of the corridor to not only add trees back into the park but to also aid in directing pedestrians to crossing lanes.

additionally, the streetscape theme was deemed a crucial piece of the extension project. street trees, green medians, themed street lights, and intersection enhancement features were incorporated into the project design. city leadership emphasized a strong desire for a balance between theming, enhancements, and functionality.

to manage stormwater, a bioretention basin is proposed within willow park adjacent to the trail. bioretention basins capture rainwater and allow it to infiltrate into the soil rather than running into a storm sewer system. these basins would be planted with native grasses, shrubs, and perennials which perform well in these types of environments. should the basin become full, an overflow channel would direct the extra rainwater into the creek adjacent to the trail and park.

efficient roadway alignment & cost-effective bridge design

because the alburnett road extension will need to traverse indian creek on the north edge of willow park, several factors were considered by our team to determine the preferred roadway alignment, including impacts to private property and the environment, avoidance of utilities, 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 spaces and parks repercussions, future land use opportunities, and overall cost.

two alignment options were primarily considered for the roadway extension. the main differentiators among the two options were their alignment immediately north of indian creek, the location and orientation of the bridge crossing indian creek, and how the alignments would bisect willow park. the western roadway option was ultimately the recommended solution primarily because of its reduced impact on wetlands and smaller bridge footprint. additionally, numerous other considerations were examined for this justification, including:

  • avoidance of interstate power & light company property
  • bowman meadows future plats already considered in this alignment
  • reduced impact on the forested area
  • less earthwork and soil disturbance
  • better alignment with indian creek
  • lower cost

designed by snyder & associates subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , the bridge over indian creek created a great opportunity to connect the corridor with its adjacent land uses and also provided an opportunity to enhance a theme for the corridor. decorative railings on the bridge could be used to introduce an additional metal component, while multiple finishes and colors could be added to proposed site furnishings, such as decorative fencing in the plant beds adjacent to willow park and at the intersections along alburnett road.

the preferred roadway alignment allowed for the shortest bridge design to traverse indian creek.

the bridge superstructure selection considered multiple factors but ultimately recommended the most economical solution while still meeting the physical needs of the specific site. for this application, a three-span, pretensioned, prestressed concrete beam (ppcb) bridge was selected as the preferred superstructure type. the beam details are standardized by the iowa dot, providing for ease of manufacture and installation. the durability of this bridge type also ensures very limited maintenance is required, while the overall cost is anticipated to be considerably less than other bridge options.

the alburnett road corridor extension plan has been embraced by community leaders, with plans to implement portions of the plan in stages as funding opportunities become available. city leaders recognize this vital extension as a critical and necessary capital improvement project for the continued development and growth of the community as it relates to efficient land use, the local economy, safe traffic flow, and a healthy quality of life for their residents.

rural community streetscape creates new kind of shopping experience

named after a rock ledge on the nearby big nehama river, falls city is strategically located halfway between kansas city and omaha in the southeast corner of nebraska. this once-flourishing railroad community experienced a steady population decline beginning in the latter half of the 20th century as new interstates diverted commerce away from the area. while the rock ledge has long since vanished with the ever-changing flow of the river, the city is proactively taking strides to reinvigorate community pride and reignite investment in their still-popular business district.

they began these efforts with the commission of a downtown revitalization plan in 2010. from this study sprang numerous objectives for improving the downtown business district while still maintaining many of the town’s old-world charms. one prominent feature is the north/south roadway known as stone street which runs through the business district. because this cobblestone brick street is extremely durable and provides character to the downtown, revitalization efforts in this area would focus on adding beautification elements and improving the walkability of the district.

new street signs complement the updated streetscape features.

snyder & associates was selected by the city to provide design and construction services for the stone street revitalization phase ii project. funded in part with community development block grant (cdbg) monies, this project is a continuation of the city’s downtown revitalization efforts that began with phase i, located on stone street between 17th and 18th streets. phase ii, extending along stone street between 16th and 17th streets mimics enhancements in the previously completed portion. it incorporates similar beautification elements, including landscaping bed areas, decorative railings, and other amenities.

the project creates both an aesthetically pleasing and functional environment along the stone street corridor, providing pedestrian gathering spaces, landscaped planting beds that add enhanced color and depth, and ada accessible walkways throughout. our team developed staging strategies that allowed for continued tenant and business access and functionality for front door deliveries throughout the project. snyder & associates acted as the project designer, assisted with project bidding, and provided construction administration services through project completion. other key elements included:

accelerated time-frame to complete construction

at the outset of construction, a critical requirement was to have substantial completion before the cobblestone festival in august. this annual festival incorporates a parade, sidewalk flea markets along stone street, and festival gatherings within the project area. snyder & associates worked closely with city staff, business owners, and the project contractor to ensure this tight schedule was adhered to and construction wrapped up before the festival.

the falls city revitalization improvements look to develop a comprehensive streetscape design, support utility infrastructure, and upgrade ada amenities that unite this historic downtown region. thanks to the pleasing quality-of-life amenities incorporated into the plans and the well-thought-out and easily accessible features, the falls city business district is sure to be the city’s primary growth area for many years to come — continuing a community-friendly environment for another generation.
