for decades, men experiencing homelessness in madison sought shelter in temporary spaces, often in church basements or emergency accommodations. that will soon change with the construction of the city’s first permanent men’s homeless shelter, bartillon shelter. located at 1902 bartillon drive near reindahl park, this long-awaited facility is designed to provide stability, support services, and a welcoming environment for up to 250 residents.

developed through a partnership between the city of madison, dane county, and non-profit operators, the shelter is a crucial step toward addressing the city’s ongoing housing crisis. in addition to providing a safe place to sleep, the shelter will include dormitory-style sleeping quarters, a commercial kitchen and laundry facility, an outdoor patio, and dedicated space for support services. sustainability features, such as solar panels and a rainwater collection system, have also been incorporated into the design to minimize environmental impact.

creating a welcoming & sustainable space

to ensure the shelter met both functional and community-oriented goals, snyder & associates provided site engineering and landscape architecture services that emphasized sustainability, accessibility, and dignity. our team worked closely with city and county officials, design consultants, and non-profit shelter operators to develop an efficient and non-institutionalized layout that removes stigma and fosters a sense of community.

a key objective of the project was to achieve leed certification, reflecting the shelter’s commitment to environmental stewardship. sustainable elements include the use of permeable pavers and a buried stormwater cistern, which help manage runoff while allowing for rainwater harvesting. this collected water will be reused for toilets and irrigation, reducing the facility’s reliance on municipal water supplies. native prairie vegetation was incorporated into the landscape design to support pollinators, improve soil health, and lower long-term maintenance costs. additionally, the building incorporates a geothermal system to enhance energy efficiency and a green roof to further improve insulation and stormwater management.

overcoming design & site challenges

comprehensive stormwater plans ensure the fields will drain quickly after heavy rain events.

the west liberty community school district (wlcsd) selected feh design and snyder & associates to prepare an athletic facility plan to consolidate their football, soccer, track, baseball, and softball facilities in one location south of the high school. for many years, west liberty held high school sports activities at various sites around their district. they needed help prioritizing the desired improvements and providing construction budgeting for the proposed projects. the snyder & associates design team assisted in preparing an analysis, preliminary design and programming, and construction budget estimates, allowing the school district to organize a promotional campaign to raise funds and solicit donations.

the school district also wanted to explore synthetic turf surfacing for the football/soccer field and both the baseball and softball fields, aiming for the highest level of service, ease of maintenance, and player safety. based on our extensive experience with specialty sports surfaces, our team selected various products and explained the intricate differences to district staff, ultimately leading to using a fieldturf® product. our design team also prepared enhanced stormwater modeling and design to provide the necessary stormwater infrastructure to improve the drainage of the surrounding site.

currently nearing 90% completion, the new sports complex includes three synthetic turf fields (football/soccer, baseball, and softball), with stadium bleachers at all three locations. a new, eight-lane, all-weather track surrounds the football field, and an expansive restroom/concession building was centrally located to serve all spectators. the new baseball and softball facilities include all the amenities one would expect in a collegiate-level facility, including batting cages, bullpens, press boxes, comfortable dugouts, and customized netting backstops. nylon netting backstops are a popular alternative to typical chain-link options and offer high uv protection and weather treatment for extra durability and longevity.

expansive concourse areas, connected by wide sidewalks, were used at the entrance and near the concession building and ball fields. these features address a key goal of the district to make accessibility to all fields and areas of the complex seamless for users of all abilities. the wide sidewalks also help to handle large crowds moving through the complex.

in realizing the vision for an integrated and state-of-the-art athletic complex, the west liberty community school district, in partnership with feh design and snyder & associates, has remarkably consolidated multiple venues. by centralizing football, soccer, track, baseball, and softball facilities into one cohesive location, the district has improved the level of service for athletes and spectators and significantly prioritized player safety. this transformative project embodies a unified vision of athletic excellence and community accessibility, elevating the sporting experience for generations.

in the heart of unincorporated polk county, a bustling two-lane corridor known as us highway 69 (ne 14th street) has long been a critical lifeline connecting des moines with the thriving suburb of ankeny. this vital artery bears a load of up to 11,000 vehicles daily, but as the years roll on, it is anticipated to accommodate a staggering 24,000 cars each day by the year 2050. to meet this growing traffic demand, the snyder & associates team was tasked by the iowa department of transportation (dot) with developing a plan for the reconstruction of a three-mile stretch of us 69, transforming it from a two-lane rural roadway into a modern, four-lane divided urban thoroughfare.

the land that flanks this corridor is a diverse tapestry of commercial enterprises, industrial hubs, and residential neighborhoods. the plan includes six strategically placed signalized intersections, enhancing convenience and safety for commuters navigating this bustling stretch of road. this monumental undertaking, which commenced in 2021, has already achieved remarkable milestones as it wraps up in 2023.

revolutionized roadway reconstruction: static lidar scanning ensured precision and safety

innovation has often paved the way for progress, and the us 69 reconstruction project was no exception. at its core, the project’s success story began with our team’s implementation of cutting-edge surveying techniques that guaranteed precision and prioritized the safety of those who worked on-site.

nurturing environmental commitment

the foundation of any successful golf course lies in a thorough understanding of the existing topography and layout. our team of skilled surveyors conducted a topographic survey of the current key features, which included the waterways, ponds, and wetland areas. the bathymetric survey, or mapping of the natural contours underwater, was done by a boat drone and manually with kayaks. this detailed assessment provided the designers and developers at tpc wisconsin with crucial information to optimize the course layout, creating a challenging yet harmonious golfing experience.

this spurred the journey to begin with an environmental perspective, as the area earmarked for transformation was once a marsh filled with silt. the restoration project became an opportunity to create a top-tier golf course and revive over 35 acres of degraded wetlands linked to the cherokee marsh. the removal of silt and the revival of the wetlands have dramatically increased the stormwater quality of water meandering through the golf course system.

tpc wisconsin design evolution

steve stricker, intimately involved in the design process, embarked on a nationwide exploration to understand the nuances of professional golf course design. after examination, the decision was clear: the course needed elevation, vegetation removal, and the restoration of canals and waterways to their original functionality.

navigating water features seamlessly is essential for golfers; all water crossings facilitate this. snyder & associates employed their engineering ability to design efficient culverts. they planned bridge locations that not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the course but also ensured the smooth flow of water, mitigating the risk of flooding and erosion.

the original golf course featured numerous perched culverts, where the inlets were positioned higher than the water level, posing a challenge for water and aquatic life to move freely between waterways. with the introduction of the new course design, several enhancements were implemented to address this issue. a total of six bridges were constructed, replacing some of the problematic culverts, while other culverts were strategically lowered within the water level to facilitate the movement of wildlife. additionally, the culvert diameters were expanded in many areas to promote smoother water flow, contributing to a more ecologically friendly and interconnected environment.

while elevating fairways, greens, and tees was part of the design, it necessitated a thoughtful balance to avoid adverse effects. strategic cuts were made in other sections throughout the course to offset these filled areas. additionally, waterways underwent enlargement and dredging initiatives, fostering improved water flow and habitat for wildlife. the process was meticulously modeled to abide by floodplain management rules and regulations.

furthermore, the team took proactive measures to secure the essential floodplain permits required for the project’s execution. this involved engaging with regulatory authorities and presenting a detailed report that adheres to environmental standards and floodplain management guidelines. by obtaining the necessary permits, the team ensured compliance with local regulations, fostering a collaborative relationship with regulatory bodies and affirming the project’s commitment to responsible development and environmental stewardship.

project completion: wrapping up the final details

nearly two decades ago, planners for linn county and several surrounding communities — including cedar rapids, hiawatha, and marion — began laying the groundwork for an east/west crosstown route along the northern edge of the cedar rapids metro area. stretching from interstate 380 in the west to highway 13 in the east, the tower terrace road corridor was the preferred option to provide access to an area with a projected population growth of 40,000 by 2040. a significant piece of this northern connector was recently realized with the upgrades to the i-380 interchange and the extensive roadway improvements on both sides of the interchange.

the new interchange was reconfigured to a diverging diamond interchange (ddi) formation to improve efficiency and safety. working in conjunction with the interchange design group, the iowa dot, and multiple jurisdictions, the team from snyder & associates was chosen to design the critical roadway elements on either side of the interchange to ensure a smooth and safe transition for motorists.

west side roadway improvements

on the west side of the interchange, our group was tasked with developing designs to reconstruct tower terrace road from 1,000 feet west of miller road to the i-380 interchange. this included updating the roadway from a rural section to an urban section with pedestrian accommodations.

staging for the project construction was critical for maintaining access to nearby homeowners and a busy commercial business on the south side of the roadway. our team designed a temporary access road along the south side of the street between miller road and twisters gymnastics to maintain access during construction. on the north side of the roadway, a temporary entrance and gapped paving were used to support access to an impacted homeowner. in addition to coordinating with the numerous utility conflicts in the project area, we devised a plan for temporary drainage during the staged construction to alleviate stormwater concerns.

during design, our team continuously contacted the idot’s consulting engineer for the ddi portion of the project to ensure our design matched the interchange tie-ins. we also prompted numerous design team meetings with the idot to ensure seamless project coordination.

east side roadway upgrades

north center point road traffic transitions into the roundabout at tower terrace road.

to the east of the interchange, constructing a roundabout at the north center point road intersection was a critical infrastructure upgrade to improve efficiency for drivers near the new ddi interchange. this joint project between hiawatha and the iowa dot was also constructed concurrently with the interchange.

the roadway upgrades include a 4-lane section with a sidewalk on the north and a 10-foot-wide trail on the south side just east of the interchange. the roundabout was designed with a single through lane for north and southbound traffic, dedicated eastbound and westbound right turn lanes, and two through lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic. the design and construction allow for the future addition of another northbound and southbound lane without requiring reconstruction or road closures. our team’s design also alleviated environmental concerns relating to the tower terrace mobile home park adjacent to the new section of the roadway.

as with the west side improvements, extensive coordination meetings with the dot’s consulting engineer were initiated to ensure interchange project alignments and profiles matched. we also designed the west and east side improvement projects to be a “mandatory tie” with the i-380 interchange project. this allowed all three projects to be completed under the same contract and timeline, saving the client money through a larger-scoped project that attracted a large pool of contractors.

tower terrace road stands to become an essential commercial corridor that will promote sustainable development and help the surrounding communities become more vibrant. with a considerable piece of this northern connector now open, this long-planned objective may be realized sooner than expected. the snyder & associates team has also been active with other sections of this vital corridor connection. it looks forward to providing services to all agencies and communities involved in bringing this extensive project to a successful conclusion.

for many years, the des moines county landfill relied on the traditional yet costly method of trucking excess water that percolated through the landfill, commonly known as landfill leachate, off-site whenever its storage lagoons became full. over the years, however, expenses related to leachate disposal at wastewater treatment plants increased, placing an untenable economic burden on the waste management facility.

as a potential solution, the des moines county regional solid waste commission (swc) proposed a solution for the permanent leachate disposal at the west burlington sewer system. viewed as an option to lower taxpayer costs within the city of west burlington, both parties consented to the agreement, and plans for the project were launched.

managing dual client representation for leachate disposal solution

the snyder & associates team was hired to represent the city’s and the landfill’s needs throughout this project. when providing services for multiple parties, clear agreements and constant communication are vital to satisfactorily satisfy all needs. since the city leaders agreed to construct the project for the landfill, we helped both clients navigate the process to enter a chapter 28e agreement under the iowa code. this agreement allows cities to contract with other governmental units—in this case, the county landfill.

additionally, to ensure the partnership was protected in the future, we prepared a substantial industrial use agreement between our clients for monitoring and reporting the characteristics of the leachate. per this agreement, the landfill cannot exceed an average of 58,000 gallons of leachate disposal per day and has a maximum limit of 80 gallons per minute. the industrial use agreement also outlines specific parameters for contaminants such as cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, silver, btex, and benzene to ensure nothing harmful is conveyed to the west burlington treatment plant.

leachate conveyance route options & project construction

with agreements in place, our team began preparing preliminary studies for various pumping alternatives and piping routes to establish the most economical yet agreeable solution for the conveyance needs. alignment a offered a shorter route with fewer grade transitions but would require multiple permits to construct a utility within the state highway right-of-way. alignment b featured a longer route but avoided private property and easement acquisitions. despite the higher upfront construction cost, alignment b resulted in the cheaper option in the long run. the group unanimously selected alignment b, and the final designs were moved forward.

waste management force main construction

the force main will connect the landfill to west burlington’s wastewater distribution system for leachate disposal.

for this project, we started by constructing the lift station at the landfill. the station’s location was pre-determined as the site had a previously placed utility hole that allowed pumping and the necessary access to power. this lift station was constructed as a submerged wet well lift station typical for transmitting wastewater flows.

our team then transitioned the construction phase to installing piping sections, adding over 12,000 linear feet of 4-inch diameter, high-density polyethylene (hdpe) piping. this material was selected because it can be installed in longer sections than pvc. since the project pathway runs through the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 right-of-way, most of the construction could be done via open-cut installation. however, the pipe intersects an active railroad at one location, and trenchless installation was applied to limit disruptions.

in a client request, we added pipe access cleanouts every 500 feet along the segments. while this is typically unorthodox for force main because of the pressure pipe, access was needed along this long expanse of pipe for special cleaning due to the nature of the waste.

this mutually beneficial waste management project reduced landfill expenses, and the lower costs ultimately trickle back to the taxpayers. the snyder & associates team was proud to bring the city and the county’s needs to the contractor to facilitate the construction of a project that minimized environmental impacts, avoided wastewater treatment plant operation interruptions, and mitigated the disturbance to nearby neighborhoods.

the exponential growth of communities, particularly in the western suburbs of des moines, has been nothing short of remarkable. the population of waukee, for example, more than tripled between 2000 and 2020. as these communities flourished, so did the demand for transportation infrastructure, leading to increased traffic congestion and a surge in traffic-related incidents.

in response to these pressing challenges, the iowa dot joined forces with snyder & associates, a trusted traffic and roadway improvements partner, to evaluate and propose practical solutions. the objective was to enhance the transportation network along the u.s. highway 6 corridor, which stretches westward from the interstate 35/80 service interchange.

interchange justification report leads to diverging diamond interchange recommendation

the snyder & associates team created an interchange justification report (ijr) that was crucial in this process by providing a comprehensive framework for meeting the fhwa’s criteria. given the challenges presented by the developed land and environmentally sensitive areas surrounding the interchange, multiple alternatives were explored. these alternatives ranged from expanding the existing diamond interchange to converting it into a tight diamond, single-point urban, or a diverging diamond interchange (ddi).

the diverging diamond interchange at hickman road and interstate 35/80 will drastically reduce the traffic conflict points.

after careful analysis, the diverging diamond interchange emerged as the preferred option. snyder & associates traffic engineers determined it best aligned with the project’s criteria. the ddi interchange is a type of interchange that can improve safety and traffic flow by eliminating the need for left turns across opposing traffic. in a ddi interchange, traffic briefly crosses over to the opposite side of the road before merging back onto the original side.

“the new ddi interchange will be a major improvement for safety and traffic flow at this busy interchange,” said snyder & associates project manager nathan carhoff. “the ddi design eliminates the need for left turns across opposing traffic, which is a major cause of crashes at interchanges.”

expanding trail accommodations: enhancing accessibility

this project area contains one of the busiest segments of interstate highway in the state of iowa. i-35/80 between douglas and university carries over 125,000 vehicles per day, with projections for traffic to grow to over 185,000 vehicles per day by 2050, creating a dangerous barrier between the communities of clive and urbandale. regionally, hickman road also carries more east-west traffic from one side of the interstate to the other than any other roadway in the metro. currently, hickman road carries approximately 40,000 vehicles per day along this corridor, with projections for traffic to grow to over 60,000 vehicles per day by 2050.

providing a safe barrier between pedestrians and bicyclists is critical for encouraging non-motorized transportation options and allowing for safe recreational opportunities for residents of all abilities. to that end, the construction of several new trail sections is included in the project. the first trail section is a 2,200-foot-long, ten-foot-wide, pcc pedestrian trail connection that will begin on the east side of the lifetime fitness entrance off hickman road. the trail will turn a loop approximately 500 feet to the east to accommodate elevation change. it will move south via a grade-separated underpass tunnel to safely carry pedestrians and bicyclists under the busy hickman road corridor. turning back to the east and south, the trail will run parallel to the southbound i-35/80 entrance ramp and connect with the clive greenbelt trail near walnut creek.

the next trail section will begin on the north side of hickman road at the grade-separated tunnel entrance. it will continue to the east, crossing the southbound interstate exit ramp via a pedestrian bridge. the trail’s path will pass beneath the interstate using a grade-separated underpass tunnel and continue over the northbound entrance ramp via another pedestrian bridge. ultimately, the trail will extend east, connecting with a local trail and sidewalk network near nw 111th street.

when complete, this new grade-separated connection will bridge a much-needed gap in the area trail network, providing users with undisturbed access to the raccoon river valley trail and the clive greenbelt trail that collectively tie thousands of residential homes and hundreds of area businesses together, along with dozens of parks and recreational areas — all with minimal to no interaction between trail users and the heavy hickman road and interstate 35/80 traffic.

these trail accommodations align with the project’s broader goals of enhancing accessibility and promoting alternative modes of transportation within the community. they are planned for construction concurrently with the interchange upgrades, demonstrating a holistic approach to transportation infrastructure development.

the quality of life for users and aquatic life will also be improved by incorporating numerous stormwater management elements to help control and clean up the added runoff associated with the additional pavement areas. most improvements drain to walnut creek located just south of hickman road. this urban stream takes on stormwater runoff from thousands of developed lots within the western suburbs of des moines, so any additional pavements contribute to higher runoff volumes and quicker discharges to the stream. with faster overland flow, many sediments and water contaminants are also carried within those waters, further damaging the streams and affecting the natural habitat for residents, fish, and plant life.

to address these additional runoff concerns, stormwater within the project area will be treated via grass swales with a rock infiltration sub-base installed in the drainageways. these improvements will promote stormwater infiltration into the ground, and gabions installed at strategic locations will slow the water further, encouraging groundwater infiltration and reducing erosion. other areas of the project will be treated using bioretention cells. these cells will be located within the median islands of the interchange.

all stormwater management features are designed based on city requirements for recharge and water quality volume. this infrastructure will eliminate damage to property and the environment by reducing, slowing, and controlling the flow of stormwater runoff. properly managed streams and natural waterways enhance the community’s natural beauty, increasing community pride, and helping make it a place where people want to live, work, and recreate.

for several years, the cedar falls community has been expanding its transportation network along the southern edge of town, including the greenhill road corridor. this work was completed to accommodate new commercial and residential development in the area and to provide commuters with another route through town. piggybacking on the success of the traffic study that resulted in the greenhill road improvements, our team was again tasked with improving the cedar heights drive corridor, extending south from greenhill road to the viking road intersection.

before reconstruction, the existing cedar heights drive corridor consisted of a two-lane rural section that was a main thoroughfare for commuters and a primary access route to the john deere facility on the south side of town. this comprehensive project included reconstructing the entire roadway to a three-lane urban section (with a two-way, left-turn lane), adding an extensive storm sewer system, building a trail, and extending the sanitary sewer and water main.

roundabouts smooth out traffic flow, increase safety

beginning at the greenhill road intersection, this project converted the existing signalized intersection to a multi-lane roundabout configuration. the existing t-intersection was converted to a single-lane roundabout at the huntington road intersection. additionally, a truck apron and landscape features were added to the viking road roundabout at the south end of the project zone. the use of roundabouts will drastically improve the traffic flow along the corridor and increase safety.

these improvements significantly impacted the cedar heights drive and greenhill road areas. the cedar heights drive reconstruction south from the intersection with viking road and north past the intersection with greenhill road, along with the construction of the roundabouts, was divided into two segments, beginning with the greenhill road roundabout. this staging effort allowed traffic access at the huntington road intersection while work was performed to the north.

in addition to the roadway reconstruction and widening, this project also saw the construction of a recreational trail running adjacent to the roadway, a new water main, sanitary sewer main, and storm sewer main were included from the east viking road roundabout north and east through the intersection of east greenhill road.

stormwater analysis drives new sewer system

traffic was temporarily rerouted to accommodate the reconstruction efforts.

an extensive stormwater analysis revealed the need for a new storm sewer system to meet sudas standards. one portion of the new roadway included a boulevard section, which limited the pavement area available for stormwater conveyance while maintaining an open lane for travel during runoff events. this area required additional intakes to meet the design requirements. various intake types and pipe materials were reviewed to optimize capture rates and reduce project costs. this required appropriate storm sewer intakes and pipe sizes to minimize the runoff spread on the arterial roadway. the stormwater improvements included dozens of new intakes and thousands of feet of storm sewer.

our team was also instrumental in this project, receiving numerous funding sources, including iowa department of transportation (dot) federal-aid swap funds, traffic safety improvement program (tsip) funds, and multiple local funding sources to implement these improvements.

the cedar heights drive reconstruction project has significantly improved the transportation network in cedar falls. with the expansion of the roadway to a three-lane urban section, the addition of storm sewers, recreational trails, and extensions of water and sewer mains, this project has enhanced the area’s infrastructure for both commuters and residents. roundabouts have greatly improved traffic flow and increased safety along the corridor. this project was successful due to the collaborative efforts of the cedar falls community, our team, and the multiple funding sources that supported the initiative.

the 4th street sw corridor is a busy north/south thoroughfare in the heart of the waverly community. this busy stretch provides access to the bustling business district and the famous wartburg college campus. much of the infrastructure along the route, including the pavement, storm and sanitary sewers, and water mains, had reached the end of its useful life and needed replacing.

city leaders enlisted the snyder & associates team to develop a design for reconstructing a nearly one-half-mile section of 4th street sw along with all underground infrastructure. while 2022世界杯32强预选赛 was underway for this significant project, the city also tasked our team with creating plans for reconstructing a one-block section of nearby 10th street sw, extending from 2nd avenue sw to w. bremer avenue.

the construction crew is in the process of forming and constructing the twin cast-in-place box culvert.

because the corridor is very flat, our team designed a vertical roadway profile to eliminate stormwater drainage issues. additionally, the structural engineers from our subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , designed a massive twin box culvert that extends under the roadway, allowing water from the golf course to flow under 4th street sw and empties into the dry run creek near 1st street sw.

our team coordinated with private utilities, the iowa department of natural resources (dnr), the iowa department of transportation (dot), and the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 to provide information about the project and obtain the necessary permits and approvals. we also coordinated 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 outreach efforts to communicate the goals and construction plans with all area stakeholders. ada-compliant pedestrian accommodations were added throughout the project zone to ensure all areas met the current code.

during construction, our team monitored numerous historical buildings along the 4th street sw corridor to ensure that vibrations from the heavy machinery did not adversely affect the foundations or structural integrity of the buildings. we also incorporated and maintained a strategic access plan during the project to provide safe ingress and egress for residents and businesses impacted by the construction. this included coordinating traffic detours with the iowa dot and city officials.

10th street sw improvements replace nearly ninety-year-old infrastructure

while smaller in scale, the reconstruction efforts on 10th street sw from 2nd avenue sw to w. bremer avenue involved replacing the sanitary sewer main, water main, storm sewer, and roadway. the replaced water and sanitary sewer main was believed to date back to around 1938. a new sidewalk was constructed along the west side of the street to provide safer access for area residents.

the major reconstruction project of the 4th street sw corridor and the one-block section of 10th street sw has significantly improved the waverly community’s infrastructure and traffic flow. as city leaders continue to focus on corridor improvements, drivers will continue to benefit from reduced travel times, less pollution, and safer commutes. the snyder & associates team will continue to assist the city in creating a better quality of life for residents.

homeowners near the intersection of 47th street and holcomb avenue in des moines are no strangers to repeated localized flooding. this issue has plagued the beaverdale neighborhood for decades, mainly because of the existing undersized stormwater conveyance system and the area’s low-lying nature.

after significant flooding occurred in 2018, city leaders contacted the snyder & associates team to put together a plan for stopping these recurring flood events. our team was intimately familiar with the area after assisting the city in developing a long-term mitigation plan for the closes creek watershed. our team and city officials worked to create cost-effective solutions for the area’s flooding that would also coincide with planned future infrastructure.

accelerated timeframe for stormwater master plan

the closes creek watershed is undergoing stormwater projects with the 47th and holcomb intersection improvements.

fast-forward to january 2000, when the city of des moines retained the services of snyder & associates to complete a comprehensive review of the closes creek drainage basin. this study included an examination of the stormwater conveyance facilities within the basin and an evaluation of existing deficiencies. in time, this master plan would extend storm sewers through this drainage area, which could handle large rain events.

however, the 47th and holcomb location sits at the farthest reach of the planned work in the closes creek watershed, which left the possibility of years of potential flood damage before improvements would benefit the area. because of this, the city of des moines agreed to accelerate storm sewer improvements in this critical area where pipes weren’t big enough to handle the more frequent and intense storms.

real-life modeling leads to right-sized solutions

gaining a complete understanding of the current stormwater systems in place was the first step toward making improvements. our team used an xpswmm hydraulic model throughout this process to produce anticipated flood elevations within streets and between homes. this type of modeling proved invaluable when presenting solutions to the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 and city staff as it clearly illustrates the comprehensive plans to alleviate flooding. in addition, multiple scenarios of various configurations and extents were developed and evaluated regarding their impacts on flooding. this provided a balance of costs and benefits for consideration when establishing the criteria and parameters of the project.

creative stormwater design to overcome challenges

ultimately, our team held several workshops with city staff to help develop a solution that involved installing a large box culvert near 47th and holcomb. this underground feature provides increased conveyance while storing stormwater during significant rain events. the stored water can then be released slowly into the existing undersized storm sewer without flooding the street. once future mitigation plans are installed, this solution provides immediate benefits in reducing street flooding, increased redundancy, and peak flow reductions downstream for more significant storm events.

during the design of this project, our team encountered several challenges. since the residential project corridor had a narrow 40-foot-wide right-of-way, our project team had to accommodate the everyday activities of residents and the construction work in these tight quarters. we devised a meticulous staging plan to accomplish this, making the transition and construction process as smooth as possible.

additionally, due to the shallow nature of the corridor’s utilities, conflicts with sanitary sewer, water mains, and gas mains were a primary concern. our team accommodated every obstruction through careful field investigations, 2022世界杯32强预选赛 , and coordinated relocations, ensuring every piece of infrastructure had clearance and approval before work began.

this box culvert project at the intersection of 47th and holcomb is only part of the city’s comprehensive plan. after the historic floods in 2018, the city pledged to spend over $145 million on stormwater improvements across the metro, tripling their investment in stormwater projects conducted in the past decade. since the 47th and holcomb improvements were completed, larger-than-average rainstorms have occurred. residents have reported them to be much less impactful than they would have expected in past years, with no localized flood events recorded, and they look forward to a flood-free future.
