the new, synthetic playing surface can withstand years of competitive play.

in 2011, the ankeny community school district opened the new ankeny high school near sw magazine road and s ankeny boulevard. two years later, the new ankeny centennial high school building was completed on nw state street, completing the district’s move to a two-high school system. the former high school building would gain a second life as northview middle school and would maintain the home of the district’s football facility, ankeny stadium. going forward, both high schools would share the stadium for football games and other activities.

constructed in 1977, the stadium remained largely unchanged over the years. with the new demands of serving both high school football teams and the sheer growth of the community, however, the snyder & associates team was pegged in 2012 to design and oversee the installation of a competition-level synthetic turf field and bathroom facility upgrades at the stadium. our team oversaw an aggressive construction schedule, and the infrastructure and synthetic turf field were constructed within 12 weeks, one week before the inaugural ankeny versus ankeny centennial varsity football game.

with the two high school arrangements now firmly rooted in the ankeny community, the school district’s field upgrades are regularly meeting the needs of the ever-increasing competition and the demands of a rapidly growing school system.

the tennis court complex fit seamlessly with the high school’s athletic fields.

the indianola community school district has been in campus upgrade mode for the last decade. guided by an athletics facility master plan, the district has been steadily replacing several aging athletic facilities and providing upgrades at others. the snyder & associates team has been heavily involved in many of these projects, including the site evaluation and construction of a new tennis court complex to serve the district’s high school.

site assessments determine optimal tennis complex location

the school district initially approached our team to conduct site assessments at four locations to evaluate possible sites for the proposed tennis courts. after the evaluations and our team’s recommendation were presented to the school board, we decided to move forward with a twelve-court complex just north of the high school building.

twelve regulation tennis courts were designed by our team and sent to bid. however, when bids that exceeded the district’s budget were returned, our team quickly adapted the plan to construct ten courts on the same site and kept the project on schedule. this professional-grade complex included asphalt courts with posts, nets, paint surfacing, and ten-foot-tall, galvanized fencing. electrical service was included in the design to provide court lighting, electrical outlets, and outdoor conduits. a spectator area was designed and constructed between the courts with a concrete apron and bleacher-style seating.

project set-back dealt with quickly

during construction, a small shale was discovered on the surface of the asphalt mix. while seemingly insignificant, if the surface coating had been applied over this imperfection, it could have ruined the court’s playing surface. our team quickly investigated the cause of this problem and determined that while the asphalt mix did meet dot standards, it was not adequate for the court’s surface. after discussions with the contractor and school district personnel, our team provided a solution that included milling a fine asphalt layer from the surface and reapplying a smoother topcoat. this solution allowed the surfacing paint system to be applied in the spring, resulting in no lost practice time for the tennis team.

with many years of high-traffic competition, the tennis courts at indianola high school are performing exceptionally well. our team looks forward to assisting the indianola community school district as its town and district continue to grow.

ada compliant facility enriches phoebe bakken memorial park in cottage grove, wisconsin

just over a decade since the village of cottage grove dedicated a parkland area in honor of a local philanthropist, phoebe bakken, the community’s parks and recreation department has been steadily adding new attractions in phoebe bakken memorial park. the 38-acre park is home to several athletic fields and a rugby pitch while the addition of two age-appropriate playgrounds in recent years further enhanced the park’s draw. other recent installations include a 2,900-square-foot shelter building with restrooms and a 2,500-square-foot splash pad adjacent to the playgrounds.

in 2020, snyder & associates was brought on board to develop a plan for a “miracle field” that required integration into the overall design and framework of the existing bakken park master plan. designed to allow children and adults with disabilities to safely play baseball, miracle fields have been growing in popularity for over two decades. instead of the grass and dirt found on a typical baseball field, a miracle field diamond and outfield are made of a custom-designed, rubberized turf material that provides athletes with a flat, cushioned surface, free of obstacles. the bases are flat, as well, allowing the players with disabilities to run, walk, or roll a wheelchair without fear of injury. likewise, the concourse, player dugouts, and bleacher areas are all ada compliant.

material sourcing & design challenges addressed through coordination

spearheaded by another local humanitarian, bill schultz, and coordinated by greg sweeney, the miracle league of dane county was founded to raise the necessary funds for bringing the field to reality. because of the organization’s non-profit status, our team went to great lengths to source equipment and materials at reduced rates in order to build the most cost-effective field. we worked with generous local vendors who were excited about the project and able to deliver quality equipment at great rates — with some materials even being donated.

a primary design challenge faced by our team was building the ball field and its supporting infrastructure to fit seamlessly with the unbuilt portions included in the park’s master plan. this included working within the confines of the park’s existing trail network. these easily accessible trail routes throughout the park connect amenities with the neighborhood and regional trail network and meet ada compliance. to fit the ball field and the necessary improvements into the available space, we worked in close collaboration with village leaders and parks and recreation department staff.

complete services offering streamlined build process

in addition to the overall design work, our team handled countless other aspects of the project, including topographic survey and construction staking, along with concept development and 3d modeling. we also provided all construction drawings, utility 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and mapping, and offered construction management services throughout the build process. a strategic landscaping plan included tree plantings to complement and extend the nearby natural, wooded environment and increase shade within the frequently used areas.

with a grand opening ceremony planned for june of 2021, the miracle league of dane county field represents our firm’s first built park project in the village of cottage grove and our first miracle field for our madison office. this project aims to provide a developmentally appropriate and unique experience for all users regardless of intellectual, sensory, or mobile capacity. with a strong dedication to promoting and expanding all-inclusive play opportunities, snyder & associates has contributed to the successful development and implementation of miracle league fields in numerous communities.

the open-air atrium provides a welcoming location for large group gatherings.

throughout their storied history, the university of iowa’s athletic teams have achieved remarkable successes on and off the fields and courts on which they compete. in the late 90s, fundraising efforts kicked off to construct a museum on campus that pays homage to the numerous legendary and influential iowa hawkeye athletes that have represented the university over the years. named for private donor and iowa alumnus, roy g. karro, the university of iowa athletics hall of fame building used styling and construction methods that closely mimic modern sporting venues.

as the midwest’s premier structural engineering firm, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 was chosen to lead the engineering design efforts for this 26,000 square-foot sports history museum. spanning three floors, the building includes two levels of museum exhibits, a three-story atrium, conference rooms, and a movie theater. on the third level, an interactive basketball court area constructed from flooring salvaged from the historic iowa field house allows young fans to practice shooting baskets and kicking field goals.

rugged concrete & steel construction pays homage to sports stadium design

exposed concrete and steel structural elements are commonly found in sports venues and stadiums.

constructed of cast in place concrete, exposed structural steel, and standing seam metal roofing, the form of the karro building is visually tied to the sporting facilities celebrated within. the attractive geometrical façade and the building’s horizontal configuration give the building much of its contemporary appearance.

the four square central bays, each with a smoked glass curtain wall and crisscrossed with structural tie rods, create a significant impression for visitors arriving at the museum along mormon trek boulevard. this rigid steel framing with x-bracing was used around the building sections to reinforce the glass-walled structure. behind the massive windows, the three-story atrium is oriented toward the university’s finkbine golf course, taking full advantage of the scenic landscape during the day. at night, the light streaming from the building produces a stunning scene. a pair of concrete structures housing elevator shafts bookend the central bays and complement the building’s geometric shape.

the hall of fame building’s location is adjacent to a protected wetland and was developed with green architectural practices in mind. stormwater runoff is controlled by a detention pond that also maintains an ecological balance between plant and animal wildlife. landscaping with native prairie grasses and the use of drainage swales in the parking lot also minimize the hall of fame’s environmental impact.

southwest recreation complex improvements include the addition of multi-purpose athletic fields

iowa state university recreation services embarked on a large-scale improvement project at the university’s southwest recreation complex. a design team from snyder & associates played an integral role in this comprehensive, multi-year project. improvements included the removal of the existing track and field and the establishment of two fully-irrigated, dual-purpose rugby and soccer fields.

for the two regulation-size fields, the snyder & associates design team integrated a fully-automated irrigation system with a pumping station capable of watering three irrigation zones simultaneously. the automatic irrigation system saves hundreds of hours of labor and allows staff to spend time on other maintenance tasks. in addition to the irrigation system design, snyder & associates provided land 2022世界杯32强预选赛 services, grading design, site demolition plans, utility layout, and drainage plans for this extensive project.

while the multi-use fields’ project wrapped up in 2012, another opportunity at the southwest recreation complex arose in 2016 with the planned renovation of cap timm baseball field. named after one of iowa state’s longtime, legendary coaches, leroy “cap” timm, the field lacked many amenities needed for a collegiate-level facility. although baseball has not been an official sport at iowa state since 2001, a club team has been calling the field home for several years.

the multi-faceted improvements were designed to address the inadequacies of the facility while maintaining the charms of the existing field. snyder & associates coordinated with university staff during the implementation of many of the upgrades. a contingent of design students provided the labor in the construction of several pieces of the project, including the refurbishment of the dugouts and seating area. other project improvements included limestone retaining walls, a new backstop, plaza entrance, and a memorial to cap timm.

snyder & associates provided design and construction services for all of the field renovations. the field improvements addressed areas of poor drainage in several places and required the removal of the infield aggregate and a complete replacement with a properly sloped geometry. our team also added an irrigation system for cap timm field that is tied to the system previously installed for the rugby and soccer fields, reducing overall project cost.

the upgrades at the southwest recreation complex provided the opportunity to repurpose and improve valuable space for the university. this welcoming and enjoyable facility created by our professional design crew has generated a renewed energy among the club teams and fans that use the facility. and much like the original cap timm field inspired generations of cyclone students, fans, and alumni, the promise of new memories in this updated facility is certainly on the horizon.

an evolution of tennis court surfaces

much like the materials used to make tennis rackets have changed over the years from wood to graphite, titanium, and other lightweight materials, so has the playing surface of the court itself. originally, grass and clay were the predominant court materials, but for the majority of recreational courts found in parks and sports complexes, asphalt (and to a lesser extent, concrete) often with an acrylic coating, is the go-to surface for durability and long life.

the landscape team at snyder & associates has been designing stand-alone tennis facilities (and as a piece of a park master plan) for many years. even as the popularity of other outdoor recreational opportunities has grown, tennis courts remain as one of the top draws in many parks, sports complexes, and school districts. and because the surfaces for tennis and its companion sport, pickleball, are similar, communities are increasingly requesting tennis courts with dual markings and adjustable nets to render the courts multi-use.

durable & professional results with seasoned sports field designers

outdoor tennis courts are typically constructed on asphalt surfaces with several surface coatings to choose from. engaging an experienced sports field design team, however, is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when considering adding or upgrading an existing tennis court facility.

achieving a professional result is so much more than simply creating a flat slab and adding nets. at a minimum, courts need to have the proper slope and adequate drainage for proper use. if these two critical components aren’t designed correctly, courts can be too steep, or worse, develop standing water after inclement weather. either of these issues will degrade the user experience.

choosing the best surface coating for your unique situation is another decision that a professional sports field design team can help make. numerous coatings are available depending on the variables of your court’s location. most surface coatings are acrylic-based and designed especially for coating asphalt. for outdoor courts, coatings are textured with a smooth and rounded, non-aggressive silica sand. this provides a slip-free surface in wet and dry conditions. options also exist to regulate the amount of cushion in the surface coating to help reduce player fatigue.

in 2013, snyder & associates was approached by leaders from the pleasant hill parks & recreation department to design several new amenities for doanes park, including a new multi-use tennis and pickleball facility. this project called for three regulation tennis courts with markings for pickleball and tennis on each court. the design included all grading work, an asphalt surface and all-weather coating, fences, and dual-purpose nets.

these expansive park improvements added to a robust offering of ball fields, playground areas, and soccer fields that were designed by our landscape architects, as well, and provide first-rate recreational opportunities for the surrounding neighborhoods. through various 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 meetings and working with pleasant hill city staff and other stakeholder groups, our designers were able to understand the priorities and budgets of the various groups to accomplish numerous improvements over the past three years.

the two new courts in this altoona park are marked for tennis and pickleball use.

a similar project in altoona saw the removal and replacement of two tennis courts in village park and two courts in haines park. dual markings for tennis and pickleball were added to the courts in both parks, as well. the altoona parks & recreation department commissioned our team to design and oversee this project which included four regulation tennis courts, a new asphalt surface and all-weather coating, nets, and 10’ tall black vinyl coated fencing. site adjustments were necessary to accommodate the regulation size courts.

at one location, buried foundations discovered during construction posed a unique challenge to the plan. our design team immediately stepped in to create a fair solution between the contractor and the city to keep this project moving forward.

north polk community school district

when the north polk community school district’s new high school opened in 2013, a tennis court facility was not allowed for in the building funds. unfortunately, this prevented the district from being able to host home tennis meets for their student-athletes. when the funds became available, the school district turned to snyder & associates to design an athletic facility that not only provided first-class amenities but also included ample and comfortable accommodations for spectators.

this project included the construction and installation of six brand new, regulation tennis courts, complete with concrete walkways and expansive bleacher pads. the courts are an asphalt surface with an all-weather coating and included posts, nets, fencing, and perimeter gating. stormwater detention was also created and additional electrical service and site restoration were completed after the courts were constructed.

dedicated tennis and pickleball courts are the highlights of iowa city’s mercer park.

the iowa city parks & recreation department went in a different direction for their project in mercer park. an existing six tennis court complex was converted to retain three full-size tennis courts and add eight pickleball courts. snyder & associates professionals evaluated the current athletic courts for resurfacing and expansion needs. our sports field design team then developed a plan that included new asphalt, partial fencing, posts, nets, resurfacing, and striping.

modern high school construction & athletic facility projects to meet the future

despite numerous renovations over the years, the old high school building no longer met the district’s needs.

when the current ames high school opened in the early 1960s, the city of ames had a population of 27,000. that number is on pace to surpass 67,000 over the next few years. although the high school building has undergone over 15 additions and improvement projects in the intervening decades, the current facility is no longer able to meet the needs of the ever-growing student population. additionally, the district needed a centralized district office and a new home for its high school baseball and softball programs.

in 2019, officials from the ames community school district held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction on their new $137 million high school building. the project was almost entirely funded by a bond referendum passed by the community in 2018. working in conjunction with opn architects, the snyder & associates team played a major role in the site design aspects of the new education facility, as well as creating the master plan for the new athletics facility and district office.

modern amenities to formulate an ideal learning environment

located on the existing high school grounds, the new building (currently about 80% complete) will have state-of-the-art accommodations. an open commons area inside the front entrance will act as a gathering space for students, staff, and community events. several safety features are incorporated into the building design to protect entries, including a secure vestibule and video monitoring capabilities.

just off the commons area, are the entrances to a fine arts auditorium and a 1,800-capacity competition gymnasium with an elevated running track. a natatorium will house an eight-lane pool with starting blocks and a separate diving area. large, open academic pods will have classroom spaces, as well as collaboration space in the middle to foster teamwork. in addition, the pod areas will be flooded with natural light through the extensive use of glass in the building design.

site development and grading design work takes center stage

the new building is situated in the space formerly occupied by the parking lot and practice fields immediately to the east of the old high school. the snyder & associates approach to site development is built on an extensive understanding of municipality requirements and design processes that focus on organized, cost-effective site plans. along with site development, an extensive stormwater management plan was established by our team so the site grading would blend with the existing landscape. to that end, 3-d site models were prepared to determine cut and fill volumes to facilitate effective communication with contractors.

multi-phase construction process poses many design challenges

since construction is being completed in five phases over several years, it was necessary to maintain the current facility at full utilization through the first three phases. after the new building is substantially completed, the current high school will be decommissioned and demolished during phase four of the plan. the fifth phase will encompass site restoration for new athletic fields and a greenhouse where the old building stood. this multi-phase construction process created several challenges for the snyder & associates design team, including:

  • the need to keep all utilities active for the existing building while running the utilities for the new building through a very narrow corridor
  • creating new stormwater infrastructure without impeding the current system

athletic facility master plan envisions park-like setting, supporting numerous athletic programs

a professional grass-turf field highlights the new ames softball field.

located just a few blocks north of the high school, the ames community school district athletic complex project centered on the development of a triangle-shaped, 26-acre parcel of land situated in a densely populated residential neighborhood. the goal of the project was to provide a new administrative facility for the ames community school district, along with sports fields and athletic facilities to accommodate the district’s high school baseball and softball programs.

to meet the anticipated high level of use and various athletic programming needs, a competition baseball field and competition softball field, along with two practice ballfields were installed. all four ballfields feature a natural grass turf mix of kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. irrigation and infield sub-drain systems maximize field playability. in addition, the existing soil was excavated and amended to enhance playability and support a strong natural turf establishment.

stormwater detention basins and native plantings assist with stormwater management and drainage of the surrounding area. our team of landscape architects and engineers collaborated to create a site that drains and blends within the surrounding neighborhood.

the plaza area at the new athletic facility features attractive landscaping and low-maintenance lighting.

other amenities of this multi-use sports complex include eight tennis courts, a cross-country running course, and a 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 plaza for shared restrooms and concessions. a netting backstop system and elevated bleachers enhance the spectator viewing experience for ball games.

the administrative building for the school district was also constructed on the site. this approximately 18,000 square foot facility includes district offices, a board room, conference rooms, and production offices for the district. the new facility consolidated all these services at one location.

community-minded renovations increase facility usability

nestled along the east bank of lake waubesa just south of madison, the village of mcfarland has experienced steady population growth over the past several decades. this influx of new residents found the local school district slowly outgrowing their current facilities. with the last major renovations at the high school having occurred more than twenty years ago, the district was dealing with inadequate learning spaces and ongoing maintenance issues. in 2016, a $65 million bond referendum was passed by the community, enabling the district to move forward with renovations and additions across all four of their facilities.

working in conjunction with plunkett raysich architects, the snyder & associates engineering and 2022世界杯32强预选赛 team provided invaluable site development services for this multi-year project, as well as providing extensive sports field design plans. all projects were designed to accommodate the ongoing community growth and match the district’s high-quality educational and community-based programming needs.

overcoming stormwater issues, access constraints & space challenges

each project site presented unique challenges to the design team. at the middle and high school locations, this included dealing with stringent stormwater management requirements and managing the replacement of existing undersized storm sewer systems within 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 rights-of-way. as a result, seven bioretention basins were incorporated into the design to address the requirements for rate control, water quality, and infiltration. also at these two school locations, site access and space challenges were addressed using several retaining walls to terrace steep slopes, in addition to relocating the baseball and practice fields.

coordinating the completion of the building additions without disruptions to school schedules over a multi-year period required careful 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and foresight. this also involved balancing everyday pedestrian and vehicle traffic around a busy construction schedule. our team also provided land survey services, construction administration, observation, and staking, and water quality and hydrologic modeling.

modern sports venues feature top-of-the-line amenities

renovation plans included improvements to the district’s sports venues. the mcfarland high school stadium had the natural turf field replaced with a synthetic turf field, while the running track around the field was reconstructed and shifted slightly to allow space for the school building expansion. synthetic turf withstands frequent use better than natural grass, which is important as the football field also accommodates other athletic school functions. a key component of the athletic field design is a rock and drain tile subbase that promotes better drainage during heavy rain events.

to make room for the high school expansion, the existing baseball field and outfield practice areas had to be removed. these areas are also used for physical education classes, band, football, and soccer practice. a sizeable green space was left intact behind the school for classes and extracurricular use, while a new baseball field complex was relocated a short distance from the school complex. the new complex includes varsity and junior varsity fields, each enclosed with fencing and include foul ball poles, upgraded dugouts, and a new scoreboard. the varsity field has a synthetic turf infield and natural turf outfield with a rock and drain tile subbase. the junior varsity diamond features a dirt infield with a natural turf outfield.

building & facility upgrades enhance learning options

at the elementary school level, improvements began with the demolition of the mcfarland primary school and additions and renovations to the neighboring conrad elvehjem early learning center. now renamed the conrad elvehjem primary school, these improvements brought kindergarten through second-grade students and staff together in one building with improved learning spaces.

the waubesa intermediate school benefited from new classrooms, a cafeteria, a larger library, and special service space for occupational, physical, and speech therapy sessions. a new roof, windows, and doors, as well as extensive maintenance work to the plumbing, heating, and cooling systems, were also performed. new wiring was installed throughout the building to meet the school’s growing technology needs.

located adjacent to the high school, indian mound middle school was the beneficiary of a new two-story classroom addition. additionally, multiple classrooms were renovated and the gymnasium was expanded.

the most extensive renovations took place at mcfarland high school where a new performing arts center and swimming pool highlighted the improvements. the former swimming pool and auditorium were constructed in 1978 and no longer met the district’s needs. the swimming pool addition features a 10-lane pool, additional spectator bleachers, expanded locker rooms, and improved accessibility. the old pool area was converted into a fitness center and weight room.

the new performing arts center features expanded patron seating to 841-seats with improved accessibility, enhanced lighting and sound system, a larger stage, and a full fly loft. located on the backside of the school, the performing arts center and new pool benefited from the addition of an 81-stall parking lot for staff and building guests. this access point further developed to include a drop-off area, creating a new entrance for the additions. many of these new spaces incorporated into the renovations were designed not only for school use but also for other community activities after hours.

a student resource center and additional classroom spaces were also added to the high school. a second story was constructed above the existing district office and the technology education area was renovated to better suit department needs. the majority of the district improvements were completed in time to reopen for the 2020-21 school year.

partnership with historic camp dodge operations spans decades

established as a training facility for the national guard in 1907, the camp dodge military installation located in johnston, iowa, has seen its share of additions and renovations in over a century of existence. the camp now serves as the headquarters of the contemporary iowa army national guard (iaang) operations, and the over 4,300-acre base maintains many facilities to serve both its military residents, as well as its civilian neighbors. the professionals with snyder & associates and our subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , have partnered with the national guard for over three decades to complete numerous projects of varying size and scope.

repurposing the historic camp dodge pool and surrounding structures

perhaps the largest project our team has undertaken at the camp was the renovation of the former swimming pool area. once billed as one of the largest filtered pools in the country, the camp dodge swimming pool complex closed to the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 in 2001. the pool opening was filled in with a mixture of sand and soil several years later. the snyder and associates team was tasked with providing landscape architecture services to help renovate the area and create a more useable space.

since the outer coping of the historic pool was still visible, it was repurposed into the design to form the outer border of a multifunctional plaza area. the coping was then surrounded by washed river rock to create a decorative border encircling the space. a portion of the plaza was paved with distinct colored, stamped concrete and paver inserts, adding depth and interest. a free-standing, open pavilion was placed on the southern edge of the plaza. the remaining pool interior space was transformed into a grassy parade ground that can be used for 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 events or military training.

an upgraded parking area was added to accommodate the new space.

updates to the original concession stand created a covered space for grilling and food service, as well as an adjoining patio for outdoor dining. additional parking and walkways were added to support the new functions of the complex and matching exterior finishes were chosen to bring a unified look to the area.

when the basement level of the adjacent camp dodge pool house began to show signs of deterioration several years later, our structural team examined the deficiencies, researched options, and prepared a plan to repair and strengthen the aging concrete foundation. their plan also included moisture mitigation strategies which ensure the structure remains a resource for service members and citizens for many years to come.

athletic training complex provides recreational opportunities

when the idea to incorporate a new athletic training complex was devised in 2019, our team was once again chosen to manage this expansive project. the plan would eventually include a large training building with an indoor field, a soccer field, a softball field, a ½-mile track, and a separate restroom building. due to the size and scope of the plan, our team broke it into five phases. the first phase included the design work and layout of the area, final dimension agreements for each facility, as well as the 2022世界杯32强预选赛 for grading, utilities, irrigation, and seeding. our team also provided design and construction observation services for each stage of the project.

the second phase kicked off with final plans for the large training building and the over 8,000-square-foot indoor turf field and a secure equipment storage area. crews broke ground in december of 2021 with building assembly and interiors to be completed in 2022. the remaining fields and running track will be planned and constructed in subsequent phases.

chapel parking lot expansion, sidewalks, & grounds improvements

the snyder & associates team was tapped again in 2021 to help modernize the chapel building’s access points and parking area. after thoroughly surveying the land to be cleared, our team provided plans and construction documents for the demolition of the current parking area and the removal of aging pavement. additionally, the earthwork and grading were completed for an expanded parking lot, repositioned ada compliant sidewalks, and new gravel access to the rear of the building. this project is also scheduled to be completed in 2022.
