meaning “miracle play” in dutch, “wonder spelen” is a pella-based nonprofit organization formed to raise money to create an all-inclusive park for children with disabilities. when the idea for creating this outdoor wonderland was proposed in 2018, pella city council members viewed the plan as an opportunity to turn the popular kiwanis park into a regional destination. the local kiwanis club immediately got to work to raise money for the park through fundraisers, private donations, and 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 contributions.

the city of pella hired the team from snyder & associates to develop a comprehensive master plan for the park improvements that would complement the city’s distinct dutch aesthetic while incorporating the necessary amenities for inclusive play. our team also worked with custom building designers from romtec to create a specialized restroom building to match the town’s theme.

importance of inclusive play for all children

approximately 13% of children in the united states are served by the individuals with disabilities education act (idea). yet, this broad population segment is often lacking regarding safe, sensory-appropriate playground facilities. while ada requirements call for accessible pathways to playground equipment, an appropriate ratio of ground-level play activities versus those higher up on the structure, and transfer platforms for children with mobility devices, inclusive playgrounds go further. these facilities are designed to be welcoming, engaging, and challenging for all children and provide opportunities to develop cognitive, sensory, physical, and social skills.

inclusive playgrounds feature a variety of environments where children can engage at their own pace and sensory input level. they’re also welcoming to parents and caregivers, many of whom may have a disability, as well.

multi-phase plan allows for staged building process

our multi-phase park improvement plan took advantage of the available open space in kiwanis park to create a new parking area, inclusive playground structures, and an eight-foot-wide trail and sidewalk network to provide direct access to the play areas. the addition of interactive playground equipment, accessible restroom building, and sensory play equipment were the main pieces constructed for the project’s first construction phase. because kiwanis park was already home to an open shelter house, tennis and pickleball courts, and a basketball court, the new play area fit seamlessly with the park’s recreational styling.

the romtec-supplied restroom building is a unique and attractive structure that stands out in the park yet fits well with the park’s design. the building is composed of two shades of tan and grey blocks arranged in a pattern that continues onto the faux chimney stacks and provides a distinct and uniform appearance. in addition, decorative shutters installed on the face of the building frame the drinking fountains and continue the dutch theme. the structure also contains a large mechanical room with ample space to access plumbing and accommodate equipment storage.

while the phase one upgrades opened to the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 in october 2021, the enhancements to the park will continue in phases two and three of the project. phase two includes various new landscaping trees and plants, planting beds, two shade structures, and another play zone. phase three will expand the parking lot, create more trails and walkways, and expand the community garden.

as future upgrades continue in kiwanis park, the city leader’s vision of the park becoming a regional destination will quickly come to fruition. the new state-of-the-art “wonder spelen” inclusive playground is positioned to serve children and adults of all ages and abilities for many years, helping people play together and ensuring no one is left out.

using the acronym first ave (furthering interconnections, revitalization, streetscapes, transportation, and aesthetics for a vibrant economy), the first avenue trail project was designed to enhance the operation of the west broadway neighborhood and provide opportunities for redevelopment of blighted industrial properties. it will connect neighborhoods, schools, and businesses and provide a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists to travel across council bluffs to the riverfront, the bob kerrey pedestrian bridge, and downtown omaha.

unique design amenities honor railroad heritage

the snyder & associates designers created a plan to establish an extra-wide trail along the project area. suitable for several modes of transportation, one section of the trail has a 10-foot-wide middle section paved in asphalt for bicyclists and other faster-moving micro-mobility devices, such as e-scooters. at the same time, two-foot-wide concrete shoulders along both edges were included for slower-moving pedestrians. due to a design change, another portion of the trail is proposed to be wider, with a 12-foot middle section with two-foot-wide concrete shoulders.

more than just a trail, however, our team created a space that provides a unique user experience along the nearly two-mile-long corridor. described by many as more of a “linear park,” the area along the trail includes attractive landscaping, several 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 green spaces, and trail plazas located every three to four blocks. the plazas were designed to pay homage to the former rail line running through the area and include industrial design aspects and materials incorporated into the amenities.

the plazas also include a variety of wayfinding signage, bicycle parking, shade structures, benches, and pedestals for holding 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 art pieces in the future. a local, private business plans to add a bike-sharing station adjacent to a plaza once it’s completed. this will allow patrons to rent a bike to ride along the trail and conveniently return to other bike-share locations. additionally, since the trail runs along the backside of many businesses along west broadway, city leaders hope to start a mural program to display artistry on the back walls facing the trail.

special features were included where the first avenue trail passes thomas jefferson high school. this includes an attractive black, welded-wire fence with gates, ada-compliant ramps leading to the school, and long seating walls for students and trail users. additional landscaping along this section ties in with the rest of the trail. to accommodate early-morning and late-night trail users, the two-mile section has decorative lighting to create a safer user experience.

anticipated development & recreational opportunities

city leaders anticipate the first avenue trail project will spur the development of other high-density residential and mixed-use facility efforts. they expect the district will greatly benefit from the multi-modal corridor and add to the residential base needed to support expanded commercial uses along the west broadway corridor.

the first phase of construction on the trail project included the section extending from 35^th to 25^th street. construction on the 16-foot-wide, phase-two section, which extends from 25^th street to the 14^th street area, will begin in the summer of 2022. at this location, the trail will link with existing trail sections on the east side of town. plans also call for adding a new community park near this juncture on the east side of indian creek. this park would add to the community-focused amenities established by creating the first avenue trail. as professionals who also live and work in the council bluffs community, the snyder & associates team is proud of this transformational project.

• stormwater management – stormwater will be captured and treated on-site using a series of stormwater basins.
• traffic & parking – other than the addition of five accessible stalls marked to accommodate miracle league activities. existing parking areas are expected to meet user needs.
• noise – audio equipment will be used in a limited capacity and is primarily for the miracle league field game use to show support for athletes. sound will be directed toward viewers and away from neighboring residents to mitigate noise concerns.
• visual – strategic tree plantings will complement and extend the nearby natural, wooded environment into the play area, provide a visual buffer from neighboring properties, and increase shade within frequently used areas.
• safety – a fence along the ravine will help support safe play and recreation for all users.
• lighting – a controlled led lighting system reduces glare and provides a bright, uniform light source directed onto the field. use of controlled lighting will also protect from light pollution in the sky and onto neighboring properties. light placement is based on the need to light the field evenly and ensure the ball in play is lit from all sides.

• primitive trails—natural surface trail of bare ground, mown grass, or mulch chips. drainage improvements and trail rerouting would occur along the trails to reduce erosion and wetness.

located just down the block from the iconic orpheum theater, the gallery garden park in marshalltown, iowa was built on the site of a former historic building that was destroyed in a fire. under new ownership, the now vacant lot was viewed as the prime location to create a mini-park for 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 use.

snyder & associates was brought on board to provide 2022世界杯美洲杯预选赛 and landscape architecture on this ambitious project. this elaborate space features not only tables and seating but also a sunken plaza with an evaporation pool and an elevated water fountain feature for noise masking. a vertical live wall garden is ringed by elevated planters around the perimeter and a large, steel pergola creates a shady space for relaxing.

as our professional landscape architect, tim west points out, this park also provided the opportunity to include “green” elements in the design and address stormwater issues that had plagued the area in the past.

“this project is very unique,” said west. “rainwater is captured from the roof of the adjacent building, then stored in harvesting tanks that were buried on-site, then this water is pumped to service the central water fountain and irrigation of the live wall and landscape plantings. a water line is not part of the improvements, meaning all the water for the site comes from captured stormwater.” the further addition of permeable pavers and a bio-swale rain garden with native iowa plantings also promote water infiltration.

west further identifies other sustainable features. “the pergola supports solar panels, which provide shade for the patio and also provides electricity for the central water fountain and lighting of the pocket park.” producing roughly 7,000 watts of electricity, the 32 photovoltaic panels result in the park having a net-zero impact.

the green infrastructure elements included in our park master plan also resulted in the project receiving a grant. “the grant was secured from the iowa economic development authority,” said west. “the owner also paid to cover the cost, while the city of marshalltown also participated, assisting with costs associated with storm sewer improvements in the parking lot.”

innovative pocket park inspires community & viability of downtown

the gallery garden park has proven to be an invaluable addition to the marshalltown community. it provides a relaxing place for downtown shoppers to rest their weary feet, while local workers can take advantage of the serene space during a busy day to enjoy a quiet lunch. this beautiful mini-park has been incorporated into many community events and even exhibits 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 art displays throughout the year.

located less than one mile southeast of fort dodge, the gypsum city off-highway vehicle (ohv) park is a premier destination for all-terrain vehicle (atv), dirt bike, and snowmobile riders, as well as other outdoor enthusiasts. situated on 800-acres of land formerly mined for gypsum, it’s the largest 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 riding area in iowa with approximately 70-miles of trails, fully signed and groomed, that covers varying terrain dynamics to provide a unique riding experience.

after being mined, the land was deemed unsuitable for urban development, with few possible alternative uses. the diverse topography and natural landscape of fields, hills, and cliffs made the location ideal for ohv use. 2022世界杯32强预选赛 for the project began almost two decades ago as a collaborative effort between individuals and groups along with united states gypsum corporation representatives and state and local officials. snyder & associates was brought on board to provide 2022世界杯美洲杯预选赛 , landscape development, and master 2022世界杯32强预选赛 guidance for this ongoing and extensive project.

phased construction takes advantage of funding opportunities

the ohv park project was separated into three distinct construction phases to capitalize on funding opportunities as they became available. during phase one construction, over 15 miles of trails were created through an area of rolling hills and open grasslands. this phase also included the building of a motocross course, a safety training area, two youth riding areas, and a parking lot capable of accommodating 350 vehicles with trailers.

during phase two, an additional 35-miles of trails were added, as well as day-use areas that included fishing ponds, improved trail safety measures, and property fencing. phase three consisted of the construction of an expansive campground with 33 sites, along with modern restroom and shower facilities. most recently, our team helped the organization place an amateur supercross track on the growing list of park amenities.

focused collaboration leads to award recognition

the snyder & associates team collaborated with the iowa department of natural resources (dnr), iowa department of transportation (dot), the city of fort dodge, webster county improvements corporation, and webster county conservation to design and construct this one-of-kind park. our team was also instrumental in developing the design for bringing electrical, a water main, and a force main sanitary sewer service to the park.

representatives from the gypsum city off-highway vehicle park accepted an annual achievement award in recognition of their outstanding use of recreational trails program (rtp) funds. hosted by the coalition for recreation trails, the ceremony was held in washington, d.c. during great outdoors week. at a cost of over $5.5 million, rtf funds were one of more than 27 grants that made the park possible without utilizing tax dollars.

as the park continues to grow and evolve, the snyder & associates team has remained active to help the organization create a roadmap for future development. this has included the compilation of a master plan that provides guidance for the development of future facilities, improvements to existing facilities, and how to maximize future funding and investment opportunities over the next twenty years.

among the tools used to compile the master plan was an online 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 input survey that collected feedback from the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 , as well as park users. additionally, the team met with key stakeholders, business owners, and park staff to better understand potential expansion opportunities and service needs. from here, the team developed goals and the necessary components and implementation steps required to meet those goals.

numerous improvement opportunities are detailed in the master plan, including the addition of a playground, observation platforms, picnic shelters, and wash bays, along with a desire for rental storage units, a challenge course, trail expansion, and cottage rentals, to name a few. a further finding of the plan was the benefit of creating an “ohv friendly community” beyond the borders of the park. this would allow off-roaders the opportunity to ride their ohv vehicles around the community on predetermined roads and paths, opening a new door of revenue streams for local retailers, restaurants, and fuel stations.

nestled among the little league fields at northview park in urbandale, iowa, the urbandale miracle league field, and the adjacent all-inclusive playground, provide recreational opportunities for children and adults with special needs. having rapidly grown in popularity over the past decade, these recreational amenities are designed to provide opportunities for children of all ages and abilities (including those with disabilities) to safely use the equipment and participate in fun outdoor activities.

there are over 20,000 kids with disabilities in the des moines metro (and even more adults) and most playgrounds do not allow them to experience the fun and joy of being outdoors with their peers. the urbandale parks and recreation department reached out to the team with snyder & associates to design a space for an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind ballfield and inclusive playground (complete with a zipkrooz® by landscape structures) for children and families of all needs — enhancing the play experience for all metro residents.

the snyder & associates team has been leading the way in efforts to bring more of these special amenities to iowa and the midwest, with both ames and ankeny also being home to miracle league fields & all-inclusive playgrounds. central to the design of both features, the surfaces are cushioned, rubberized, and completely flat to help prevent injuries and eliminate any barriers to wheelchair users or visually impaired participants.

donated services help overcome cost barriers

our team donated a variety of professional services to prepare design and construction documents for park improvements, including ada-compliance review and analysis, topographic survey, gravity sewer design and operation, signage and monuments design, park 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and design, master 2022世界杯32强预选赛 , and sports field design. to help bring awareness to the fundraising efforts to build this project, the snyder & associates team also created display boards to exhibit at urbandale city hall and polk county 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 works. a 3-d model was produced and used to create an informational video that provided the 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 with a virtual tour of the finished project while it was still under construction.

other improvements to northview park included parking lot updates with additional handicap-accessible parking stalls and bus access. an entrance feature with inspirational baseball quotes that also honors donors, as well as bronze statues that promote all-inclusive play was also included. in addition to softball and baseball games, urbandale city leaders plan to utilize the miracle field to host kickball and other events for individuals of all ages and abilities.

completed in spring 2018, the urbandale miracle league field and all-inclusive playground was celebrated with an opening day ribbon-cutting ceremony on may 4, 2018. the event included a community social and exhibition baseball game to kick off the 2018 outdoor sports season.

for further ease of accessibility, the park boasts over 220 parking stalls in two convenient locations, several multipurpose trail connections leading to regional trails to the south and west of the park, and an ada-accessible fishing pier that puts anglers of all abilities right on the water’s edge. the use of large stones and a cascade water feature, along with numerous native plantings creates a pleasing and harmonious environment.

addressing site challenges & phased construction needs

working on a former brownfield site, the design team was faced with numerous challenges over the course of the project. foremost, the conversion of the former basin into a recreational lake required a sophisticated earthwork plan to harvest as much clay soils on site as possible. this allowed the construction of the clay liner and utilization of large amounts of sandy soils in the open space areas. also, the construction and routing of the regional trail connections within the wetland and floodplain areas required significant 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and permitting. under real-world conditions such as rain, localized flooding, and hydric soils, the trail alignment work required thoughtful creativity and meticulous design efforts.

project construction occurred in five distinct phases allowing similar construction activities to be bundled together into bid packages. this helped to reduce mobilization and project administration costs. during the first phase, the majority of the earthwork and lake construction was completed. the utilities were also located and a groundwater well was established. the second phase incorporated the building of the multi-use trails, parking lots, bioretention areas, and the addition of the permeable paver areas.

phase three brought in most of the architectural elements, including the restroom shelter, lakeside shelter, civic shelter, stone crossings, and the overlooks, while phase four consisted of the addition of the fishing pier. wrapping up the project in the fifth phase was the construction of the circular playground with five different ada-accessible play experiences.

the strong emphasis on fishing and fish habitat allowed our team to work with the iowa department of natural resources (dnr) and polk county conservation to attract regional recreational programming support and park interest.

the connection of the numerous multi-use trails to the park allows it to serve as a regional trailhead, which is a prominent park attraction. the park will host an installment of johnston’s annual “jazz in july” concert series along with other live music, charity, and community events. through the reclamation of this former brownfield site, a community resource has been created, resulting in a higher quality of life for local residents and regional visitors.
