national flood hazard layer of the project area.

to provide access to microsoft’s new data center and open additional area for development in southwest west des moines, city leaders contracted with snyder and associates and our structural engineering subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , to design the roadway extension of grand avenue, west of grand prairie parkway, and across johnson creek. the project also included implementing a conveyance improvements plan along johnson creek to lower flood elevations upstream of raccoon river drive.

much of the land north of raccoon river drive is in the floodplain of the raccoon river, necessitating the johnson creek improvements. when the property is developed within the floodplain, buildings will be elevated one foot above the one percent annual flood chance.  however, flood elevations in johnson creek were higher than those of the raccoon river under certain future conditions, putting developments in the corridor at risk of flood events even though they were raised above river flood events. additionally, restrictions caused by narrow bridges under the iowa interstate railroad and raccoon river drive were improved as part of the project.

multiple bridge projects highlight expansion efforts

custom-designed monuments for the city of west des moines.

our team created a 2d hydraulic model to evaluate the designs of new bridges over johnson creek and obtained floodplain permits for several projects along the creek. we relocated a portion of the creek to allow for the construction of a new overpass of the iowa interstate railroad on grand prairie parkway. we designed two new bridges at raccoon river drive and the newly constructed grand avenue. our team also worked with iowa interstate railroad to size and permit a new bridge over johnson creek at its track location.

the project included 4,800 feet of new roadway along grand avenue and a 204’-long bridge over johnson creek. the bridge was designed with a 10’-wide trail on the north side and a 5’-wide sidewalk on the south side with custom anodized aluminum railings. our team also designed four decorative monuments at each corner of the bridge. these monuments match the design our team created for the city of west des moines to be included at all its creek crossings in the southwest part of the city. all project work is scheduled to wrap up in the spring of 2024.

spearheaded by the snyder and associates team, the grand avenue extension project in west des moines will improve traffic flow in response to the increased demands of this rapidly expanding area of the city. the incorporation of a conveyance improvements plan along johnson creek not only addressed floodplain considerations but also enhanced the overall infrastructure resilience. with the completion of multiple bridge projects, including a new overpass and a 204’-long bridge over johnson creek, the city now boasts 4,800 feet of new roadway, contributing to the city’s ongoing development efforts and ensuring a more efficient and secure transportation network for its residents.

the red line represents the new clear creek trail alignment around the interstate 80/380 interchange.

the clear creek trail project faced numerous design challenges, particularly as it runs through a vulnerable portion of the clear creek watershed, ultimately connecting to the iowa river in coralville. addressing environmental concerns, a wetland delineation report was prepared to avoid impacts on national wetlands. additionally, comprehensive hydrologic and hydraulic reviews were conducted to mitigate backwater effects caused by the trail’s infrastructure, ensuring no rise at existing interstate bridges.

coordination efforts with the iowa department of transportation (dot) and the iowa department of natural resources (dnr) were critical, facilitating the acquisition of right-of-way and floodplain permits essential to complete the project. a strategic design approach included the integration of ten pipe culverts within the trail corridor, preserving existing waterways’ functionality without compromising the proposed trail.

design integration with interchange reconfiguration

workers install one of the bridges over clear creek.

anticipating future needs, the trail’s alignment and profile were carefully planned to seamlessly integrate into the dot’s interchange project with an eye on additional trail connections when funds are available.

central to the project’s success are the two newly constructed continuous concrete slab pedestrian bridges over clear creek, measuring 120 feet and 130 feet, respectively. our subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , developed detailed plans, including decorative railings and textured concrete, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of these trail bridges while ensuring structural integrity.

enhanced connectivity, elevated recreation

the completion of the clear creek trail project marks a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and recreation within johnson county and connecting the communities on both sides of the newly redesigned interchange. as pedestrians and cyclists traverse its scenic route, the trail encourages active lifestyles and strengthens community bonds. with a commitment to sustainability and innovation, snyder & associates continues to spearhead projects that enrich the fabric of our communities, paving the way for a brighter, more connected future.

the former bridge was damaged beyond any hope for repair.

the 3.75-mile-long trestle-to-trestle trail connects the inter-urban trail in des moines to the johnston trail system on the north side of interstate 35/80. in the spring of 2019, the trestle-to-trestle trail bridge over beaver creek was severely damaged by an ice dam and collapsed. the loss of this critical piece of infrastructure meant a major detour for trail users. through a multi-agency effort that included polk county conservation, the des moines metropolitan 2022世界杯32强预选赛 organization, the state of iowa, and city leaders from johnston and des moines, the snyder & associates team, along with our structural subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , were able to create a replacement bridge that far surpassed the structural stability of its damaged predecessor.

rail bridge replaced with a modern structure

the former trail bridge was originally a 316’-long timber and steel railroad bridge that had been repurposed for trail use. when the ice dam caused its collapse, designers knew they needed to create a replacement that could withstand more significant threats from flooding and debris. the final design for the new bridge is a much more solid structure that incorporates modern aesthetics with practical design applications. at the same time, it honors the history of the former rail bridge with decorative corten steel design features integrated into the safety railing to resemble wooden trestles. this feature also mimics the styling used on several other area trail bridges, creating a cohesiveness to the mid-iowa trail network.

the nearly 320’-long replacement structure utilizes pretensioned, prestressed concrete beams instead of the trestle-style construction. this allowed for two large concrete and steel piers better suited to withstand the flooding forces and ice flow issues experienced along beaver creek. an observation “bump-out” near the middle of the span provides a place for trail users to stop and admire the surrounding creek and natural environment.

on both ends of the bridge are stone pillars built to resemble the welcome signs in nearby johnston. these predominantly limestone structures have a nameplate on one side with “beaver creek crossing” displayed. a structural steel “archway” at the bridge entrance provides a whimsical decorative feature.

distinctive aesthetic & customized lighting system sets this bridge apart

led bridge lighting

the customized lighting system makes the new bridge a destination stop for trail users.

the customized led lighting system incorporated into the design is unique to a structure of this type. it illuminates the bridge deck and approaching trail path and the bridge’s underside. the lighting system can be programmed to change colors in a near-unlimited pattern, sequence, or timeframe, creating a one-of-kind visual attraction for trail users and vehicle traffic on nearby interstate 80.

with this new trail bridge open and serving residents again, trail users no longer need to take an extensive detour to reach their destination. the solid construction and long-lasting materials ensure this structure will withstand whatever mother nature throws at it in the future. and thanks to its unique design and eye-catching lighting system, this bridge attracts people’s attention in the area and will for many years to come.

most trail 2022世界杯32强预选赛 in central iowa over the past two decades has centered around making connections. whether connecting small communities or social venues, providing alternative travel access between popular destinations has been a common factor. in development for the past seven years, the red rock prairie trail is adding perhaps one of the most critical links yet. this nearly 16-mile-long trail extension (connecting monroe, prairie city, and mitchellville) is part of the long-range goal of linking saylorville lake with lake red rock and the neal smith national wildlife refuge.

the red rock prairie trail will predominately run along a former rail corridor, eventually extending from lake red rock south of monroe to the mitchellville city limits. the snyder & associates team recently completed the design and plan preparations for approximately eight miles of this multi-use trail extending from red rock park in monroe to prairie city with a direct link to the entrance of the neal smith national wildlife refuge. the trail also provides access to prairie city’s garden square park in the center of town. two former railroad bridges required structural retrofitting to complete the alignment of the eight-mile, monroe to prairie city, trail section.

rail-trail funding drives project forward

bison statue on the red rock prairie trail

this multi-use trail has a direct link to the entrance of the neal smith national wildlife refuge.

this new, hard-surface trail has been driven by relentless fund-raising efforts being led by jasper county conservation. this grant funding has included a “…$510,000 federal lands access program grant, a $263,711 federal recreational trails grant, a $240,000 transportation alternatives program grant, and a $116,839 state recreational trails grant.”

because the former railroad line used for the trail alignment was one of the first three rail lines across central iowa, the grant manager (iowa dot) required an additional level of historical and cultural studies to ensure the project did not adversely affect the original site. our design team worked closely with iowa-based wapsi valley archaeology to ensure the new trail would not damage any areas of historic significance.

by linking the two, major central iowa lakes via a multi-use trail, state and local agencies anticipate a marked increase in out-of-state (and in-state) recreational enthusiasts using this unique trail configuration to travel between these midwestern destination spots. our design team continues to work with jasper county conservation and other agencies to plan the remaining trail sections to wrap up this important trail connection.

crews work on the rehabilitation efforts on the former railroad bridge over the iowa river.

while it’s been many years in the making and still has many miles remaining to construct, the river’s edge trail is ideally positioned to take advantage of the scenic beauty, diverse wildlife habitat, and sprawling wetlands in the heart of iowa. currently, two segments are open at either end of the trail. when completed, however, the approximately 37-mile-long trail will connect steamboat rock to marshalltown, passing through many communities in between. the snyder & associates team has been intimately involved in the extensive trail 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and bridge evaluation projects, working closely with hardin county officials on the northern leg of the trail.

following a former railroad corridor, the river’s edge trail (formerly iowa river trail) will ultimately connect seven cities and two counties to the iowa river greenbelt and the central iowa trail network. additionally, connections will be made to a handful of local trail networks, including the iowa river state water trail, gunderson trail in eldora, bates trail in union, and the pine lake state park trail east of eldora.

steamboat rock bridge over iowa river

our team initially began on this project in steamboat rock, working to design a 0.6-mile section of trail that starts at south 1st street and heads west through a tree-lined corridor. the structural engineers from snyder & associates subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , developed plans to rehabilitate a nearly 100-year-old railroad bridge over the iowa river. this 60’-long deck girder bridge was reinforced and retrofitted with a paved surface and decorative rails to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians.

our team performed an air and slump test on the concrete as part of the construction observation process.

from the iowa river crossing, our team designed the trail alignment south to the community of eldora, crossing several rural roadways. at the 215th street (t avenue) location, we incorporated a box culvert as a trail tunnel under the roadway, creating a safe passage for trail users. to date (2022), the entire trail from steamboat rock to eldora is paved. 2022世界杯32强预选赛 work and funding securement efforts will continue until the two trail sections meet around the marshall and hardin county lines.

世界杯足球比赛预选赛 support keeps trail development on track

like many multi-use trail projects, 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 buy-in and enthusiasm are critical to help keep them moving forward. the collaborative effort between marshall and hardin county officials, private groups that led fundraising efforts, and a design team dedicated to creating first-class amenities was the driving force that generated a level of enthusiasm that has not waned. with an estimated 223,000 people living within a half-hour drive of the new alignment, it’s anticipated that the river’s edge trail will provide ample opportunities to locals and visitors alike for recreation and exploration through america’s heartland.

in november 2016, linn county iowa residents passed the water and land legacy bond issue with a 74 percent approval. this popular concept demonstrated that county residents overwhelmingly supported water quality, floodplain storage, and the preservation of natural areas. with the funding mechanism secured and a focus backed by community approval, linn county officials partnered with the engineers and environmental scientists with snyder & associates to design and construct a series of water quality projects in wanatee park.

beyond wetlands, creating new amenities in wanatee park

during the initial design stages, community leaders had the sole intention of creating new wetlands within the park. while conducting site inspections, our environmental team noticed a few additional improvements that would significantly benefit park amenities while also enhancing water quality within the local watershed. through discussions with linn county conservation officials, a new trail bridge and fishpond were approved in addition to the planned wetlands.

wetland creation & enhancements lead design efforts

green, grassy wetland in wanatee park

in total, seven wetlands were constructed or rehabilitated to increase the park’s sustainability and improve the area’s water quality.

our project team focused on the wetlands portion of the project first. county officials already had specific areas in mind for potential wetland enhancement and creation. throughout these assessments, our team vetted the options, affirming their selections and providing new suggestions, as well. in total, seven sites were chosen for wetland improvements, with a net cut of 2,280 cubic yards achieved.

though all wetland sites required updates, there was a varying degree of work needed across the seven locations. some of the wetlands were enhancement projects where the area had once been deeper but had filled in with sediment over time. for these areas, the focus was excavating sediment and restoring hydrology to improve wetland functions and provide an environmental lift.

other wetlands were created from scratch based on the location of drainage features and tiles. agricultural tiling systems previously conveyed water from nearby fields into wanatee creek. a few of the newly constructed wetlands allowed tiles to flow openly within the wetlands, supplying hydrology and creating ideal wetland habitats. this was a great way to improve water quality as tiles that had previously outlet nutrients directly into the creek now drain into the wetlands and the nutrients are absorbed by plants rather than flowing downstream. several of these constructed wetlands included an agri drain water level control structure™ in the designs. these structures allow linn county conservation staff to draw down wetland water levels if necessary, for seeding or vegetation maintenance, such as treating invasive species.

consistent with the water and land legacy bond’s initial goal, these wetlands filter nutrients and provide floodplain storage benefits necessary to improve local water quality while enhancing wildlife habitat and the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

pedestrian trail bridge replaces high-maintenance culverts

new steel bridge over wanatee creek

the new bridge sits higher than its predecessor to avoid washout potential.

the next phase of this project focused on the construction of a 30-foot-long prefabricated steel truss pedestrian and maintenance bridge over wanatee creek. this bridge was designed to replace deteriorated twin corrugated metal pipe (cmp) culverts that were past their useful life. the culverts were covered by a soil and mulch mixture that would constantly be washed out and require replacement due to the low trail profile and the crossing’s location in the federal emergency management agency (fema) regulatory floodway.

a more permanent structure at a higher elevation was necessary. our team consulted with our structural subsidiary, shuck britson, to identify design solutions. it was determined that using a prefabricated structure with site-specific dimensions would be the best fit as these are well suited for similar span lengths and trail bridge loading. because this is a fairly simple design that requires no formwork or falsework, this option ended up being the most economical solution for the client, as well. the bridge was assembled off-site by the manufacturer and shipped to the park for placement. a crane was used to lift the approximately 20,000-pound bridge off the truck and position it on the newly designed and constructed abutments.

since this crossing is also the main access point for county maintenance vehicles, special consideration was taken during its design. to accommodate vehicle access across the bridge, the connecting trail had to be built at a different slope than the pre-existing crossing to allow for a wider trail radius. this also created an opportunity to perform 100 feet of stream restoration to stabilize the channel flowing under the new bridge.

stream restoration efforts improve aquatic habitat

during the new trail bridge design process, scour issues were apparent in the section of wanatee creek surrounding the crossing and the banks lacked stabilization as they had previously only been shielded by bits of broken concrete. despite all of this, the creek in this location was in decent shape, however, the aesthetics did not match the surrounding prairie or park objectives. to stabilize the streambanks and enhance aesthetics, flexamat® erosion mats were used to defend against streambank erosion and promote native vegetative growth.

since wanatee creek experiences high velocity flows, additional flexamat® was installed across the bottom of the channel to further protect against scour associated with the new bridge. the result was an extremely smooth streambank transition that is hard armored, easy to maintain, and much more aesthetically pleasing than the bits of broken concrete that previously lined the banks. after a summer’s worth of vegetation growth through the flexamat®, the project has shown a major improvement in water quality, stream function, stabilization, and in-stream wildlife habitat, all while successfully complementing the park.

after completing the construction of the bridge and stream improvements, linn county conservation staff observed orange-throated darters near the new bridge, which hadn’t been spotted in this area in some time. this freshwater fish species is on iowa’s endangered list and its arrival was seen as a significant success by county leaders and staff.

creation of recreational fishing pond draws anglers

wanatee pond project

the pond helps sustain the area’s high water quality and is stocked with bluegill, bass, crappie, and other local species.

the final piece of this project involved the construction of the first fishable pond owned by linn county. the pre-existing site for the pond consisted of a bermed-up area that was weedy, non-functional, and underutilized as a wanatee park attraction.

specific elements were incorporated into the pond’s design to promote water quality and meet project goals, including a sediment forebay, shallow slopes, an impermeable clay base layer, and seepage mitigation measures such as drainage diaphragms. these features, along with native plantings and a recently added prairie buffer, help filter pollutants off the adjacent highway and farm fields and protect the pond as water enters. with a healthy pond system established, our environmental team equipped the pond with various items to enhance fish habitat, including spawning beds, jetties, and assorted depth pools.

the pond also included an agri drain water level control structure™, a cmp riser outfall, and an emergency spillway. our experts determined this was the best fit for the area as it enables staff to control water depths and maintain fishing structures. these additions, along with shallow slopes near the interior perimeter, increase safety for recreational users. county crews are responsible for continual maintenance and routinely mow a trail around the pond for improved access. after construction was completed, the pond was filled and stocked with bluegill, bass, crappie, and other local fish species.

collaboration & communication leads to project success

the success of these projects involved significant collaboration between the snyder & associates project team and linn county conservation officials. our experts helped with the technical aspects while the client attended site visits, discussed site conditions, and helped determine where the various project features would be placed. between their vision and our expert designs, wanatee park continues to experience improved water quality and is viewed as a blueprint for future collaborative efforts.

shortly after the high trestle trail bridge over the des moines river was completed in 2011, the focus quickly shifted to continuing the trail south through the ankeny community to link up with the gay lea wilson and the oralabor gateway trails on the south side of oralabor road. this vital linkage would also provide a direct trail route to saylorville lake and the expansive neal smith trail.

to make this final connection, the trail must traverse two busy roadways, ankeny boulevard and oralabor road. the snyder & associates team continued with their high-level trail 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and design work to develop plans for a pedestrian tunnel and bridge that would tie the trail network together. at the same time, the new amenities would incorporate design aesthetics that mimic the northerly trail sections and the high trestle trail bridge between madrid and woodward.

pedestrian tunnel under ankeny boulevard (us 69) creates safe passage

from the ankeny market pavilion near 1st street, the high trestle trail cuts diagonally through town, following the old rail line the entire trail is situated on, passing near the ankeny police station and ankeny high school. at ankeny boulevard, our team explored options for carrying trail traffic over the busy roadway. the desired option was to build a cast-in-place rcb (box culvert) pedestrian tunnel under the street to create a safer and seamless path for bicyclists and pedestrians. formliners were used to provide added detail and visual appeal to the tunnel’s concrete walls, giving the appearance of large, cut stones at a fraction of the cost.

completed in two construction seasons, traffic signal upgrades, utility work, and minor grading were necessary to prepare the area for the tunnel construction. a gravity drainage stormwater system was designed for this location, negating the need for a pump station and resulting in substantial cost savings.

tunnel construction was completed with a multi-phased staging process to keep one lane of traffic moving in both directions at all times. the tunnel design included lighting, landscaping, and the ability to configure new or additional design elements in the future. our team’s plan also established the trail alignment to continue the trail from magazine road to oralabor road during the next construction phase.

pedestrian bridge over oralabor road “book ends” high trestle trail bridge

the day after setting the bridge in place, contractors focused on paving the bridge approaches.

at the busy oralabor road location, the gay lea wilson, oralabor gateway, and high trestle trails were brought together with an attractive pedestrian bridge over the roadway. our team collaborated closely with city leaders to determine specific aesthetic details that would be included in the bridge.

the snyder & associates team, in conjunction with the structural engineers from our subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , used an array of visualization tools and imagery to communicate detailed bridge designs and the relative costs needed to cover the construction. the design team pushed the boundaries of “typical” pedestrian bridge design to develop a unique structure worthy of its highly visible location.

the preferred theme ultimately zeroed in on a design that would pay homage to the original bridge for which the trail is named, the 1912 high trestle bridge over the des moines river. this bridge was demolished and replaced in the 1970s to create saylorville reservoir. the former west abutment of that iconic bridge still stands and has been repurposed into an overlook of the new high trestle trail bridge that replaced the railroad superstructure. the 1912 abutment has an interesting architecture that inspired the abutment frames on the bridge over oralabor road.

switchback sidewalks on either side of the roadway allow pedestrians and bicyclists to descend to the street level and access the oralabor gateway trail. or, after crossing the bridge, users can seamlessly continue south onto the gay lea wilson trail network.

trail connections establish central iowa as an outdoor destination

with the completion of these two structures and the vital trail connections they create, central iowa residents now have an incredible, interconnected array of trail options. it also has well-positioned the area as an outdoor enthusiast’s vacation destination, drawing outside money for the local market. if the hundreds of residents who attended a recent grand-opening celebration for the new bridge are any indication, these new trail links will be popular attractions for many years.

farragut residents walk along the proposed trail route before final plans were approved.

providing recreational opportunities, creating access to local attractions and amenities, and establishing organic connections between rural communities are just a few of the reasons multi-use trails continue to proliferate in the midwest. the town of farragut in southwest iowa had all these factors in mind when the admiral trail development was first proposed. as leaders in the trail design field, coordinators enlisted the team from snyder & associates to help create this unique and accessible biking, hiking, and walking trail.

built on a nearly four-mile-long section of the former burlington northern santa fe (bnsf) railroad corridor, the trail extends from the west side of farragut to the highway 2 crossing near shenandoah. on a local level, the project was spearheaded by the farragut admiral trail committee, a group of interested residents who advocated for bringing the trail project to the community. the snyder & associates team coordinated with the committee, along with other organizations in the design and alignment of the trail.

surface material decisions & bridge renovations highlight trail success

the trail concept was originally designed to be a portland cement concrete (pcc) surface. after bids came back much higher than organizers had anticipated, our team quickly modified the plans to switch to a granular surface. this option, and ultimately the final decision, helped to keep the project moving forward. plans for paving the trail in the future are still in the works as more funding is procured.

the trail alignment east of farragut passes alongside agricultural fields, through wooded areas, and over low wetlands on its path to highway 2. this mix of land types created unique challenges for the design team, including the need to traverse several small creeks and waterways. the existing railroad bridges had fallen into disrepair and one had suffered serious damage in a fire.

our structural subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , developed plans to repair, reinforce, and upgrade these bridge structures for trail use. at one location, three concrete culverts were placed in lieu of repairing the fire-damaged bridge. at another location, our team advised reinforcing some of the bridge pilings and completely replacing others. with this work completed, both bridges and the culverts received a concrete deck overlay.

flooded area in iowa

extensive grading was necessary to raise the trail route above several flood-prone areas.

an additional challenge faced by our team was the low-lying and flat elevation of the trail area which posed a high potential for flooding. creating an ada-accessible trail and still having proper drainage along the route required a collaborative effort with the contractor and our field observation team. snyder & associates also performed environmental evaluations and permitting to accommodate an adjacent wetland property owned by the iowa department of natural resources (dnr).

dedicated team drives fund-raising efforts

our team was also instrumental in helping to identify and procure funding for the admiral trail project. this included grants from the greater shenandoah foundation, southwest iowa 2022世界杯32强预选赛 council (swipco) transportation alternative program (tap), federal recreation fund, state recreation fund, doppelt fund, and the resource enhancement & protection (reap) fund.

to work with funding as it became available, our team developed the trail project to be constructed in two distinct phases. the first phase began on the west side of farragut and extended to 390th avenue. the recently completed second phase continued from 390th avenue to highway 2. the trail will eventually connect to the wabash trace nature trail in shenandoah and be a part of the frontier iowa trails system.

the admiral trail project highlights the extensive service offering of snyder & associates. over the several years of 2022世界杯32强预选赛 efforts and funding procurement, our team was active in performing surveys, staking, environmental, construction observation, and numerous other tasks. now complete, the admiral trail shines a light on farragut’s unique past and connects trail enthusiasts to local attractions and amenities.

the special weathering steel used for the bridge beams does not require painting but instead develops a chestnut-colored patina.

the rapid population growth in ankeny, iowa can in large part be attributed to its proximity to des moines and the easy access to interstate 35. to support new site development on the southeast side of the city, expanding that efficient access was critical. the new iowa department of transportation (dot) driver’s license station, several warehouse retail centers, hotels, and other commercial properties were depending on roadway infrastructure to support the increasing growth and vehicle traffic on the east side of the interstate.

to quickly expand access in the area, a new interchange and bridge spanning the interstate at the corporate woods drive location were viewed as the optimal choice. the aggressive schedule desired by city leaders and iowa department of transportation (dot) officials required important decisions to be made quickly.

the professionals with snyder & associates, along with subsidiary 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , were selected to partner with 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 works engineers from the city of ankeny, polk county, iowa dot staff from district 1, office of design, and office of bridges and structures. a cohesive team effort was an essential basis of collaboration for project 2022世界杯32强预选赛 and sound decision-making.

unique bridge features for corporate woods drive interchange

due to the grading at the interchange site, a significant amount of fill placement was required to achieve the new corporate woods drive roadway configuration. our team’s extensive coordination with the geotechnical engineers helped identify the proper construction procedures and specifications to control the settlement of new roadway fill.

the roadway alignment and geometry were established early in the design process. this allowed the bridge design team to immediately get started creating the plans for the steel plate girder bridge featuring a new aesthetic theme. the steel girder design was optimized for the required span lengths over interstate 35 and to provide proper clearance for interstate traffic below. other unique bridge features include:

  • curved mask walls and end posts with elaborate rustication patterns
  • curved pier cap terminations
  • elegant arched steel frame and mesh panel pedestrian railing with a special coating system
  • two-tone color pattern for concrete sealers to highlight rustication recesses
  • astm a588 weathering steel, which does not require painting, but instead develops a deep chestnut colored protective patina that contrasts against the lightly colored concrete sealers
  • a pedestrian trail cross-over benched into the berm using a special retaining wall below the bridge to allow safe pedestrian passage

an arched steel frame and mesh panel pedestrian railing borders the sidewalk along the north side of the bridge.

the design team recognized that pedestrian access was an important aspect of the area’s long-term needs. a raised sidewalk and concrete separation barrier were incorporated on the north side of the bridge. the west approach grading incorporates a sidewalk with a switchback and benched berm to carry the sidewalk back under the west bridge span. this will connect with a future sidewalk on the south side.

the project received the iowa quality initiative structures award and was recognized as the best steel beam bridge on iowa’s primary road system between 2002 and 2004. the award is sanctioned by the associated general contractors of iowa, the iowa dot, and the federal highway administration (fhwa). with all the necessary expertise under one roof, the snyder & associates/2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 team is able to quickly bring roadway/bridge projects of this magnitude to completion, on time — and on budget.

opened in 1909, the locust street bridge was one of a series of four bridges (locust street, walnut street, grand avenue, court avenue) built between 1907 and 1918 spanning the des moines river in the heart of iowa’s capital city. over the years, these ornately decorated, reinforced-concrete arch structures became symbols of the city’s rich history. they also provide a critical link connecting the east village with the downtown des moines business district.

in the late 1960s, the locust street, walnut street, and grand avenue bridge decks were reconstructed along with other improvements. as a cost-saving measure, most of the original ornamentation was removed, leaving only the arched spans and piers. after another half-decade of use, the time came again in the 2010s to either renovate the existing structures or build entirely new bridges. focusing on the grand avenue bridge, the professionals with 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 were brought on board to help develop the designs for completely replacing this iconic structure.

deteriorated structure requires complete replacement

bridge over river with cars driving across

the newly reconstructed grand avenue bridge served as the model for the locust street bridge.

fast forward several years, with the reconstructed grand avenue bridge open and operating as intended, the team from 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 was once again tasked with performing the same duties for the replacement of the locust street bridge. much like the bridge on grand avenue, the engineering team found the locust street bridge to be structurally deficient with scour-critical concrete piers and poor hydraulic performance.

the 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 team developed plans for a pretensioned, prestressed concrete (ppc) beam bridge that would maximize the use of standard construction details and could be constructed for under $10 million. the design copied many of the same aesthetic details as the newly reconstructed grand avenue bridge, including the use of scalloped metal panels along the sides of the bridge. as already established, this design satisfies the requirements of efficiency and economy.

unique features, bridge details, & design challenges

des moines bridge and sidewalk

the new locust street bridge provides ample room for on-street parking and shared bicycle lanes.

while the four-span, 446-foot long, 42-foot wide, concrete-beam bridge is 12-feet narrower than the grand avenue bridge, it was designed to support two lanes of traffic, on-street parking, and 12-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides. a non-standard deck cross-section was incorporated to raise the pedestrian sidewalk above the roadway. a modified crash rail protects pedestrians, while the raised sidewalks with extended overhangs enhance the dramatic effect of the scalloped fascia panels.

the engineering team also added beamlines under the raised pedestrian sidewalk to support a snooper truck for future under-bridge inspections and maintenance. the additional sidewalk load resulted in nonuniform beam reactions requiring careful analysis to determine the proper reinforcing strand and shear stirrup patterns, as well as bearing pad sizes. further, more than 18 separate utility conduits were incorporated into or below the new bridge deck along with a new, 20-inch water main.

also like the grand avenue bridge location, the bridge abutments at locust street were designed to penetrate the levee on both riverbanks while still maintaining flood protection for the city, with the new bridge abutments sized to match the locations of the floodwalls. to minimize excavation and disturbance to the existing floodwalls, large portions of the original massive abutments were left in place. the new prototypical, semi-integral abutments were developed to account for the pile fixity caused by the rigid connection/incorporation into the existing abutments.

with the pier footings for the new bridge supported on steel piles extending to bedrock, one less pier was required, increasing the flow area of the river by nearly twenty percent. additionally, the bridge is designed to withstand the hydraulic effects of a 100-year frequency flood event and the intense water pressure acting against the bridge fascia.

expert coordination & collaboration lead to aggressive build schedule

bridge construction temporary causeway

temporary causeways aided crews during the bridge construction process.

following the demolition of the previous structure, construction began on the new bridge. the shallow river depth allowed for the use of temporary causeways during construction with a minimal impact on the environment. even though work was temporarily delayed in 2019 due to high river levels, work wrapped up in september of 2020.

the 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 team, along with parent company snyder & associates, made the project possible by collaborating to provide the development of project concept statement, preliminary bridge and roadway plans, hydraulic analysis and documentation, final bridge and roadway design plans, as well as the extensive coordination and development of aesthetic details. also, the design team provided rapid response service for issues that arose during construction. these included addressing unanticipated site conditions, pile driving inquiries, and general construction observation.

with the grand avenue and locust street bridges complete, plans are underway to let the walnut street bridge in 2022. the innovative aesthetics on the new bridges is viewed as a visual complement to the iowa women of achievement bridge located just upstream from grand avenue and helped to transform the downtown river area for a new generation.
