comprehensive stormwater plans ensure the fields will drain quickly after heavy rain events.

the west liberty community school district (wlcsd) selected feh design and snyder & associates to prepare an athletic facility plan to consolidate their football, soccer, track, baseball, and softball facilities in one location south of the high school. for many years, west liberty held high school sports activities at various sites around their district. they needed help prioritizing the desired improvements and providing construction budgeting for the proposed projects. the snyder & associates design team assisted in preparing an analysis, preliminary design and programming, and construction budget estimates, allowing the school district to organize a promotional campaign to raise funds and solicit donations.

the school district also wanted to explore synthetic turf surfacing for the football/soccer field and both the baseball and softball fields, aiming for the highest level of service, ease of maintenance, and player safety. based on our extensive experience with specialty sports surfaces, our team selected various products and explained the intricate differences to district staff, ultimately leading to using a fieldturf® product. our design team also prepared enhanced stormwater modeling and design to provide the necessary stormwater infrastructure to improve the drainage of the surrounding site.

currently nearing 90% completion, the new sports complex includes three synthetic turf fields (football/soccer, baseball, and softball), with stadium bleachers at all three locations. a new, eight-lane, all-weather track surrounds the football field, and an expansive restroom/concession building was centrally located to serve all spectators. the new baseball and softball facilities include all the amenities one would expect in a collegiate-level facility, including batting cages, bullpens, press boxes, comfortable dugouts, and customized netting backstops. nylon netting backstops are a popular alternative to typical chain-link options and offer high uv protection and weather treatment for extra durability and longevity.

expansive concourse areas, connected by wide sidewalks, were used at the entrance and near the concession building and ball fields. these features address a key goal of the district to make accessibility to all fields and areas of the complex seamless for users of all abilities. the wide sidewalks also help to handle large crowds moving through the complex.

in realizing the vision for an integrated and state-of-the-art athletic complex, the west liberty community school district, in partnership with feh design and snyder & associates, has remarkably consolidated multiple venues. by centralizing football, soccer, track, baseball, and softball facilities into one cohesive location, the district has improved the level of service for athletes and spectators and significantly prioritized player safety. this transformative project embodies a unified vision of athletic excellence and community accessibility, elevating the sporting experience for generations.

the school district’s new football stadium was the catalyst project that has driven the construction of several other athletic facilities, including the new ballfields.

the gilbert community school district provides its small but growing community with top-notch educational facilities. to match this offering, the district has also steadily upgraded its athletic facilities to provide students with spaces that enable top performance and promote school pride. the athletic facilities professionals with snyder & associates have been active with many of these projects, including the recent design and construction of new baseball, softball, and practice fields south of the existing football stadium complex on a vacant site. an all-purpose storage building for holding athletic and maintenance equipment was also included in the design.

all three new fields utilize the existing entry plaza at the southwest corner of the football stadium. the main walkway running north and south between the ballfields doubles as a driveway to access each field and the storage building. the pavement along this route was poured to a depth of 6″ to support heavy equipment that may need to access the area. conveniently, all utilities were routed adjacent to this main walkway to connect to the field areas.

vacant location provides space for modern ballfield amenities

one of the main advantages of designing a field at a new location was the opportunity to work from a blank slate. this afforded the designers the space to add all the amenities you’d expect at modern ballfields.

this state-of-the-art complex has spacious, above-ground dugouts at baseball and softball fields. the backstops have a safety netting and padding system, while the outfield fences sport much-needed windscreens to minimize the impact of the gusty iowa winds. an expansive concrete concourse surrounds the backstop of both fields to provide better fan access and access to the new concession/restroom building. each field also received a new scoreboard and pro-grade lighting systems to illuminate the fields.

other amenities include a press box at each field with raised bleacher systems, a 200-250 seat capacity at the softball field, and a 300-350 seat capacity at the baseball field. the baseball field includes a double bullpen for both the home and visitor sides, while the softball field includes a double bullpen for the home side and a single for the visitors. outdoor batting cages were also added to each field on the home team side.

field treatments & stormwater upgrades minimize rain delay impacts

the softball and baseball fields and the practice field consist of an irrigated, natural athletic turf grass with an underdrain system. the infield construction includes a specialty ballfield aggregate (bryan rock red ball diamond aggregate) on a sand base. red ball diamond aggregate is a finely crushed dolomitic limestone with a natural red color that allows water to pass through it. it will provide years of service with little maintenance required when appropriately applied.

with the addition of so much concrete around the fields, our team also prepared enhanced stormwater modeling and design to provide the necessary stormwater infrastructure. stormwater management encompassing the athletic fields required a new storm sewer system, field drain systems, and sheet flow and infiltration to drain water away from the fields and toward the existing stormwater detention areas. both fields drain into a field under-drain system and a series of collector storm sewer lines. the baseball field outlets are to the northeast, while the softball field outlets are to the west. the interior plaza areas required drainage through several small intakes and drainpipes released into the existing storm management area to the west.

while not immediately constructed, plans included a new storage building and service pad area south of the baseball field. water, electricity, and communication services are planned for this facility through underground channels from the stadium area. this 48′ x 24′ metal building will be designated for athletic storage, irrigation service, and source equipment.

the new, synthetic playing surface can withstand years of competitive play.

in 2011, the ankeny community school district opened the new ankeny high school near sw magazine road and s ankeny boulevard. two years later, the new ankeny centennial high school building was completed on nw state street, completing the district’s move to a two-high school system. the former high school building would gain a second life as northview middle school and would maintain the home of the district’s football facility, ankeny stadium. going forward, both high schools would share the stadium for football games and other activities.

constructed in 1977, the stadium remained largely unchanged over the years. with the new demands of serving both high school football teams and the sheer growth of the community, however, the snyder & associates team was pegged in 2012 to design and oversee the installation of a competition-level synthetic turf field and bathroom facility upgrades at the stadium. our team oversaw an aggressive construction schedule, and the infrastructure and synthetic turf field were constructed within 12 weeks, one week before the inaugural ankeny versus ankeny centennial varsity football game.

with the two high school arrangements now firmly rooted in the ankeny community, the school district’s field upgrades are regularly meeting the needs of the ever-increasing competition and the demands of a rapidly growing school system.

the tennis court complex fit seamlessly with the high school’s athletic fields.

the indianola community school district has been in campus upgrade mode for the last decade. guided by an athletics facility master plan, the district has been steadily replacing several aging athletic facilities and providing upgrades at others. the snyder & associates team has been heavily involved in many of these projects, including the site evaluation and construction of a new tennis court complex to serve the district’s high school.

site assessments determine optimal tennis complex location

the school district initially approached our team to conduct site assessments at four locations to evaluate possible sites for the proposed tennis courts. after the evaluations and our team’s recommendation were presented to the school board, we decided to move forward with a twelve-court complex just north of the high school building.

twelve regulation tennis courts were designed by our team and sent to bid. however, when bids that exceeded the district’s budget were returned, our team quickly adapted the plan to construct ten courts on the same site and kept the project on schedule. this professional-grade complex included asphalt courts with posts, nets, paint surfacing, and ten-foot-tall, galvanized fencing. electrical service was included in the design to provide court lighting, electrical outlets, and outdoor conduits. a spectator area was designed and constructed between the courts with a concrete apron and bleacher-style seating.

project set-back dealt with quickly

during construction, a small shale was discovered on the surface of the asphalt mix. while seemingly insignificant, if the surface coating had been applied over this imperfection, it could have ruined the court’s playing surface. our team quickly investigated the cause of this problem and determined that while the asphalt mix did meet dot standards, it was not adequate for the court’s surface. after discussions with the contractor and school district personnel, our team provided a solution that included milling a fine asphalt layer from the surface and reapplying a smoother topcoat. this solution allowed the surfacing paint system to be applied in the spring, resulting in no lost practice time for the tennis team.

with many years of high-traffic competition, the tennis courts at indianola high school are performing exceptionally well. our team looks forward to assisting the indianola community school district as its town and district continue to grow.

the desire for a natural grass field like at jack trice stadium led to the prospect of replacing the synthetic soccer field at the cyclone sports complex with a natural grass field. the isu team contacted the landscape professionals at snyder & associates to assist with the design decisions, develop a grading plan, and recommend an irrigation system for this natural grass project.

hybrid stitching reinforces the field quality

a new irrigation system was installed to help maintain the field and ensure it receives exacting irrigation requirements.

though the natural grass blend proves highly durable, the team implemented a new technology on the soccer field called grassmax hybrid stitching. as the name implies, hybrid stitching uses synthetic fibers and a highly specialized machine to stitch them into the existing natural grass to reinforce the surface and provide root stabilization. the synthetic fibers also stabilize the sand layer, ensuring the evenness of the playing surface.

a hybrid stitched field provides the safety and playability of a natural grass surface with the durability and versatility of a synthetic playing field. after the new sod was installed on the soccer field, the synthetic hybrid stitching process was completed in september 2023.

developing and maintaining turf aligns neatly with the iowa state university horticulture program’s teaching objectives, supplying a vital service for the university. additionally, having an in-house world-class horticulture program is a tremendous benefit to the sports programs and athletes at iowa state university. our landscape team takes great pride in working with these faculty-led professionals while providing first-class amenities for the next generation of collegiate athletes.

just over a decade since the village of cottage grove dedicated a parkland area in honor of a local philanthropist, phoebe bakken, the community’s parks and recreation department has been steadily adding new attractions in phoebe bakken memorial park. the 38-acre park is home to several athletic fields and a rugby pitch while the addition of two age-appropriate playgrounds in recent years further enhanced the park’s draw. other recent installations include a 2,900-square-foot shelter building with restrooms and a 2,500-square-foot splash pad adjacent to the playgrounds.

in 2020, snyder & associates was brought on board to develop a plan for a “miracle field” that required integration into the overall design and framework of the existing bakken park master plan. designed to allow children and adults with disabilities to safely play baseball, miracle fields have been growing in popularity for over two decades. instead of the grass and dirt found on a typical baseball field, a miracle field diamond and outfield are made of a custom-designed, rubberized turf material that provides athletes with a flat, cushioned surface, free of obstacles. the bases are flat, as well, allowing the players with disabilities to run, walk, or roll a wheelchair without fear of injury. likewise, the concourse, player dugouts, and bleacher areas are all ada compliant.

material sourcing & design challenges addressed through coordination

spearheaded by another local humanitarian, bill schultz, and coordinated by greg sweeney, the miracle league of dane county was founded to raise the necessary funds for bringing the field to reality. because of the organization’s non-profit status, our team went to great lengths to source equipment and materials at reduced rates in order to build the most cost-effective field. we worked with generous local vendors who were excited about the project and able to deliver quality equipment at great rates — with some materials even being donated.

a primary design challenge faced by our team was building the ball field and its supporting infrastructure to fit seamlessly with the unbuilt portions included in the park’s master plan. this included working within the confines of the park’s existing trail network. these easily accessible trail routes throughout the park connect amenities with the neighborhood and regional trail network and meet ada compliance. to fit the ball field and the necessary improvements into the available space, we worked in close collaboration with village leaders and parks and recreation department staff.

complete services offering streamlined build process

boasting nearly 5,000 intramural sports teams, iowa state university takes great pride in its active and engaged student body. however, providing adequate facility and field space to accommodate such a large number of teams is a delicate balancing act. recently, the university’s recreation services division completed a $10 million renovation and redesign of the southeast recreation complex on the east side of university boulevard. the 2022世界杯32强赛程表时间 were enlisted to provide several site development-related services for this multi-faceted project.

located directly across from jack trice stadium, the plan called for reconfiguring the existing playing fields on the nearly 40-acre site, as well as creating eight sand volleyball courts and a large, grass and gravel parking lot to increase parking capacity. all new natural turf was sown on the six softball fields and the dozen multi-use soccer/football fields that are distributed between the north and south sections of the complex. other highlights include the addition of an almost 4,000 square foot service building for maintenance, equipment storage, and restroom facilities, a lighting network to allow night games, and a robust irrigation system to help maintain the fields.

flooding concerns & stormwater management require thoughtful solutions

the majority of the southeast recreation complex is located in the floodplain, with a significant portion of the central and northern sections of the site located in the floodway. while the occasional flooding of the fields would not be of serious concern, the flooding of the service building could result in the loss of valuable resources and equipment. through careful 2022世界杯32强预选赛 , our designers positioned the service building outside of the floodway and elevated the lowest floor of the building to a minimum of three feet above the base flood elevation to alleviate the flood threat and meet city requirements.

stormwater management was also a key concern on the site. at the same time, providing an adequate water source for the playing field irrigation system was necessary. to remedy both challenges, our team incorporated a wet-well pump and designed a large irrigation/stormwater detention basin on the south end of the complex. the well, along with stormwater runoff, feeds the basin — this water is then used to irrigate the playing fields. the design team sized the storage basin to hold a 21-day supply of water available for irrigation needs.

our team was also responsible for coordinating the extensive grading process over the entire 40-acre site. during this process, a detailed staging plan was utilized to restrict heavy construction traffic from the playing fields to minimize compaction of the existing pristine topsoil. the plan also called for limited grading in the floodway portion of the site and required no new fill to establish the grade.

transformative field improvements for campus intramurals

university officials are confident this transformative project will be a game-changer for the intramural leagues on the iowa state campus. the addition of lights gives students the flexibility to schedule games and scrimmages well into the evening hours, while the improved drainage and irrigation system may help to extend the season for some sports with fields that are better able to handle iowa’s unpredictable and ever-changing weather conditions. additionally, by making the facility more appealing, some non-university organizations such as special olympics, iowa games, and potential new clients, could help increase off-season revenue.

while the multi-use fields’ project wrapped up in 2012, another opportunity at the southwest recreation complex arose in 2016 with the planned renovation of cap timm baseball field. named after one of iowa state’s longtime, legendary coaches, leroy “cap” timm, the field lacked many amenities needed for a collegiate-level facility. although baseball has not been an official sport at iowa state since 2001, a club team has been calling the field home for several years.

the multi-faceted improvements were designed to address the inadequacies of the facility while maintaining the charms of the existing field. snyder & associates coordinated with university staff during the implementation of many of the upgrades. a contingent of design students provided the labor in the construction of several pieces of the project, including the refurbishment of the dugouts and seating area. other project improvements included limestone retaining walls, a new backstop, plaza entrance, and a memorial to cap timm.

snyder & associates provided design and construction services for all of the field renovations. the field improvements addressed areas of poor drainage in several places and required the removal of the infield aggregate and a complete replacement with a properly sloped geometry. our team also added an irrigation system for cap timm field that is tied to the system previously installed for the rugby and soccer fields, reducing overall project cost.

the upgrades at the southwest recreation complex provided the opportunity to repurpose and improve valuable space for the university. this welcoming and enjoyable facility created by our professional design crew has generated a renewed energy among the club teams and fans that use the facility. and much like the original cap timm field inspired generations of cyclone students, fans, and alumni, the promise of new memories in this updated facility is certainly on the horizon.

the north towne corporate park in deforest-windsor is one of dane county’s rapidly growing industrial areas. the park is designed to accommodate light warehouse distribution and other multi-tenant, commercial structures, marketable to a broad base of potential owners. one new business housed in an unassuming building has brought a state-of-the-art, sports-focused business to the park. grb academy, a top-rated baseball training facility recently opened the doors to their newest location in the north towne park.

grb academy is housed in a 52,000 square foot pre-engineered metal building. inside you’ll find 14 batting cages, a full-size, turf-surfaced baseball infield, a pro shop, and a 6,000 square foot weight room. 1848 construction brought in sketchworks architecture to create the design for this expansive facility along with snyder & associates to perform the site design work for this unique business.

stormwater mitigation efforts key to site development services

this massive training facility provides a unique service for aspiring athletes.

situated in a former agricultural area, the building site presented several challenges for the design team to overcome. while the building is located on the western portion of the lot, asphalt parking areas surround the building on the north, east, and south sides. additionally, two entrances from north towne road are positioned on the east side of the lot.

the vast amounts of impervious areas required stormwater management features to handle runoff. two bioretention basins (one to the north of the parking lot and one to the south) were designed to accommodate this need. bioretention basins are landscaped depressions used to slow and treat on-site stormwater runoff via filtration. stormwater is directed from the parking area to the basin where it percolates through the system. the water then flows to a larger existing wet detention basin shared by several other plats in the park.

the snyder & associates team also provided all land survey work for the site, construction staking efforts to aid site grading, and construction administration throughout the project. a landscaping plan consisting of low-maintenance trees and shrubs that border the parking areas was also provided.

located directly south of the grb academy is another sketchwork’s-designed project, the trowbridge group flex building. designed as a multi-use facility, snyder & associates provided all of the same site development services for this commercial structure. careful 2022世界杯32强预选赛 on the grb property allowed the team to use the same detention basin for over 80 percent of the stormwater runoff. similar landscaping design also complements the adjacent grb property.
