boasting nearly 5,000 intramural sports teams, iowa state university takes great pride in its active and engaged student body. however, providing adequate facility and field space to accommodate such a large number of teams is a delicate balancing act. recently, the university’s recreation services division completed a $10 million renovation and redesign of the southeast recreation complex on the east side of university boulevard. the 2022世界杯32强赛程表时间 were enlisted to provide several site development-related services for this multi-faceted project.

the majority of the southeast recreation complex is located in the floodplain, with a significant portion of the central and northern sections of the site located in the floodway. while the occasional flooding of the fields would not be of serious concern, the flooding of the service building could result in the loss of valuable resources and equipment. through careful 2022世界杯32强预选赛 , our designers positioned the service building outside of the floodway and elevated the lowest floor of the building to a minimum of three feet above the base flood elevation to alleviate the flood threat and meet city requirements.

stormwater management was also a key concern on the site. at the same time, providing an adequate water source for the playing field irrigation system was necessary. to remedy both challenges, our team incorporated a wet-well pump and designed a large irrigation/stormwater detention basin on the south end of the complex. the well, along with stormwater runoff, feeds the basin — this water is then used to irrigate the playing fields. the design team sized the storage basin to hold a 21-day supply of water available for irrigation needs.

our team was also responsible for coordinating the extensive grading process over the entire 40-acre site. during this process, a detailed staging plan was utilized to restrict heavy construction traffic from the playing fields to minimize compaction of the existing pristine topsoil. the plan also called for limited grading in the floodway portion of the site and required no new fill to establish the grade.

the johnston-based, corporate headquarters of delta dental of iowa is strategically positioned along the busy interstate 35/80 corridor. this high visibility location exposes the company name and logo to the thousands of drivers who pass by each day. in 2013, delta dental hired opn architects to design an addition for their building that would allow them to consolidate operations at the johnston location. snyder & associates structural engineering subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , was brought on board to lead the structural engineering design efforts for this expansive, 25,000 square-foot, two-story addition.

elsewhere in the interior, the structural team was able to blend a variety of materials into a solid, cohesive structure. the use of a terra cotta feature wall and wood paneling frames the open staircases and creates distinctive focal points in the addition. the staircases incorporate painted steel, composite stringers with stainless steel handrails, and glass guardrails that continue the open sightlines throughout the space. the cast-in-place concrete stair supports are overlaid with an attractive terrazzo veneer. and like the staircases, painted steel structural columns are left exposed and become a part of the interior design.

in addition to the open floor plan, the space was also designed to allow plentiful access to daylight. to limit excess heat and glare on the south side of the building, a louvered sunscreen covers the aluminum-clad curtain wall. rising from floor to ceiling, the sunscreen lets in plenty of natural light while maintaining a comfortable environment inside. and because of the additional story over the original building, the company name and logo gained more visibility to the interstate.

for more than 30 years, the des moines metro opera (dmmo) operated out of the former carnegie library building in the heart of indianola. built in 1904, the structure held historical significance for the community but the outdated energy systems, limited space, and other structural concerns hindered the dmmo’s ability to expand their community engagement and administrative services. however, after decades of diligently maintaining the building’s historic integrity and original layout, the group was hesitant to construct an addition that would diminish the building’s authenticity.

by its nature, a 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 works facility must be designed to sustain heavy daily use in order to maintain the infrastructure of an active city. more importantly, the facility must continue full functionality even during catastrophic events, such as floods, inclement weather, or other natural disasters. because this building site is located a short distance from the iowa river and is in the floodplain, additional fill had to be trucked to the location to raise more than half of the site above the flood stage. this also ensured the facility was designed above and beyond a 500-year flood event, including the outdoor material storage area. the potential for flooding events also created a complex storm sewer design scenario the designers were required to accommodate.

this substantial facility will house millions of dollars worth of equipment and requires adequate protective measures to ensure no unauthorized entry while maintaining ease of access for employees. our team aided in the design of security features for the facility including durable fencing and a modern gate access control system.

the north towne corporate park in deforest-windsor is one of dane county’s rapidly growing industrial areas. the park is designed to accommodate light warehouse distribution and other multi-tenant, commercial structures, marketable to a broad base of potential owners. one new business housed in an unassuming building has brought a state-of-the-art, sports-focused business to the park. grb academy, a top-rated baseball training facility recently opened the doors to their newest location in the north towne park.

grb academy is housed in a 52,000 square foot pre-engineered metal building. inside you’ll find 14 batting cages, a full-size, turf-surfaced baseball infield, a pro shop, and a 6,000 square foot weight room. 1848 construction brought in sketchworks architecture to create the design for this expansive facility along with snyder & associates to perform the site design work for this unique business.

stormwater mitigation efforts key to site development services

this massive training facility provides a unique service for aspiring athletes.

situated in a former agricultural area, the building site presented several challenges for the design team to overcome. while the building is located on the western portion of the lot, asphalt parking areas surround the building on the north, east, and south sides. additionally, two entrances from north towne road are positioned on the east side of the lot.

the vast amounts of impervious areas required stormwater management features to handle runoff. two bioretention basins (one to the north of the parking lot and one to the south) were designed to accommodate this need. bioretention basins are landscaped depressions used to slow and treat on-site stormwater runoff via filtration. stormwater is directed from the parking area to the basin where it percolates through the system. the water then flows to a larger existing wet detention basin shared by several other plats in the park.

the snyder & associates team also provided all land survey work for the site, construction staking efforts to aid site grading, and construction administration throughout the project. a landscaping plan consisting of low-maintenance trees and shrubs that border the parking areas was also provided.

central to the project design was the city of madison’s requirement for leadership in energy and environmental design (leed) certification at a silver rating or higher. developed by the u.s. green building council (usgbc), leed is a program that focuses on

environmental and social sustainability principles to transform how buildings are designed, built, and operated. the program not only considers environmental and occupant well-being, but it also strives to use fewer resources in the construction process, which helps minimize waste.

in addition to the building’s green design, one major contributing factor that led to leed accreditation on this project was the use of permeable pavers in three separate parking areas. around the perimeter of each parking lot, permeable pavers were used to cover 4,300 square feet of space. the pavers were installed on 18″ of compacted stone to promote stormwater filtration. also, two bioretention areas with native plantings cover another 2,000 square feet of land. a 2′ layer of engineered soil comprised of compost and sand on top of another 2′ layer of rock, encourages the filtration of stormwater runoff before it infiltrates the native soil below.

the use of permeable pavers and bioretention areas will help improve water quality and replenish underground water reservoirs. together, these stormwater management facilities are expected to achieve over 90% predevelopment infiltration volumes. these green designs developed by snyder & associates were a major factor in this project garnering leed “platinum” certification, far exceeding the city’s silver certification requirement.
