home to one of the most popular horticulture programs in the country, iowa state university takes great pride in developing and maintaining its many sports facilities with its “in-house” talent. a case in point is the recent upgrades completed at jack trice stadium and the soccer field at cyclone sports complex.

the desire for a natural grass field like at jack trice stadium led to the prospect of replacing the synthetic soccer field at the cyclone sports complex with a natural grass field. the isu team contacted the landscape professionals at snyder & associates to assist with the design decisions, develop a grading plan, and recommend an irrigation system for this natural grass project.

hybrid stitching reinforces the field quality

drainage lines on a soccer field

a new irrigation system was installed to help maintain the field and ensure it receives exacting irrigation requirements.

though the natural grass blend proves highly durable, the team implemented a new technology on the soccer field called grassmax hybrid stitching. as the name implies, hybrid stitching uses synthetic fibers and a highly specialized machine to stitch them into the existing natural grass to reinforce the surface and provide root stabilization. the synthetic fibers also stabilize the sand layer, ensuring the evenness of the playing surface.

a hybrid stitched field provides the safety and playability of a natural grass surface with the durability and versatility of a synthetic playing field. after the new sod was installed on the soccer field, the synthetic hybrid stitching process was completed in september 2023.

developing and maintaining turf aligns neatly with the iowa state university horticulture program’s teaching objectives, supplying a vital service for the university. additionally, having an in-house world-class horticulture program is a tremendous benefit to the sports programs and athletes at iowa state university. our landscape team takes great pride in working with these faculty-led professionals while providing first-class amenities for the next generation of collegiate athletes.

when the idea was first proposed for a student experimentation center on the iowa state university campus, leaders envisioned a flexible, open space that would elevate the school’s hands-on learning approach. fast forward several years, and the newly completed five-story student innovation center (sic) delivers on that dream with over 140,000 square feet of laboratories, shops, and classrooms. this spectacular, glass-walled structure allows students to experiment with robotics, design software, work with 3d printing, and even learn how to blow glass.

the building has an evolving set of “maker” spaces ranging from metal, wood, and composite fabrication shops to a test kitchen, café, retail outlet, and a rooftop garden. as the lead 2022世界杯美洲杯预选赛 firm for this expansive project, the snyder & associates team was tasked with developing a site plan that would blend with the existing campus surroundings while at the same time creating a safe and welcoming environment for students.

demolition, historic preservation, & utility coordination highlight development plan

to accommodate the modern facility in the middle of the iowa state campus, our team was faced with 2022世界杯32强预选赛 the demolition of a portion of sweeney hall and the underutilized nuclear engineering building. these plans had to account for an active campus environment and the constrained site location. additionally, the design team needed to take extra precautions so as not to disturb the foundation of the marston water tower located adjacent to the site. this 168-foot-tall, iconic tower is listed on the national register of historic places.

water tower on iowa state's campus

the proximity of the marston water tower to the site required meticulous 2022世界杯32强预选赛 by the design team.

as a further challenge to the team, the building site contained a congested area of underground utilities, including storm sewer, sanitary sewer, steam tunnel, electrical primary feeders, natural gas lines, and telecommunication. daily communication with the onsite mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors was necessary for seamless coordination. 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , a subsidiary of snyder & associates, was enlisted to create the new electrical vaults and steam tunnel designs in the tight quarters.

the design team also utilized phased construction by creating bid packages for the building and site demolition, site utility installation, building construction, and site restoration. this method further streamlined the entire site development and building construction process.

underground stormwater detention & multimodal accommodations

running along the west side of the building location, bissell road is the main thoroughfare through campus. however, the storm sewer system along this route was nearing capacity even before this project was envisioned. our team devised a plan to install an underground stormwater detention system to provide adequate drainage for the new building site. with the already congested utility issue in the area, adding this system took meticulous 2022世界杯32强预选赛 . our team determined that two strategically placed stormtech stormwater chamber systems could adequately handle the site’s stormwater needs.

parking area cement work

the stormwater detention basins were hidden under parking and driveway areas.

these chambers, or vaults, consist of large sections of corrugated plastic placed on a compacted gravel bed. once covered, stormwater is diverted to the basin through normal channels where it’s temporarily stored. it’s then released through a series of outlet pipes specifically designed to let water out in a controlled manner to mitigate flooding.

like several other projects our team has designed for iowa state university and other college campuses, the need for multimodal accommodations was a chief concern. to meet this need, safe and expansive pedestrian walkways, and convenient bicycle parking were included in the external design, along with separate building access for vendor and maintenance traffic.

iowa state’s new student innovation center was designed with future changes and reconfigurations in mind. the interior building systems were left exposed for just this reason. the all-glass exterior was designed to reduce the building’s solar heat gain and simultaneously capture daylight to reduce energy consumption. these forward-looking ideas promote the sustainability of modern innovation and position this world-class structure for leed gold certification soon. undoubtedly, this award-winning facility will inspire many more generations of iowa state students.

contemporary facility honors university’s sports heroes
atrium of the university of iowa hall of fame as the open house is set up

the open-air atrium provides a welcoming location for large group gatherings.

throughout their storied history, the university of iowa’s athletic teams have achieved remarkable successes on and off the fields and courts on which they compete. in the late 90s, fundraising efforts kicked off to construct a museum on campus that pays homage to the numerous legendary and influential iowa hawkeye athletes that have represented the university over the years. named for private donor and iowa alumnus, roy g. karro, the university of iowa athletics hall of fame building used styling and construction methods that closely mimic modern sporting venues.

as the midwest’s premier structural engineering firm, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 was chosen to lead the engineering design efforts for this 26,000 square-foot sports history museum. spanning three floors, the building includes two levels of museum exhibits, a three-story atrium, conference rooms, and a movie theater. on the third level, an interactive basketball court area constructed from flooring salvaged from the historic iowa field house allows young fans to practice shooting baskets and kicking field goals.

rugged concrete & steel construction pays homage to sports stadium design

exposed structural elements of university of iowa hall of fame building

exposed concrete and steel structural elements are commonly found in sports venues and stadiums.

constructed of cast in place concrete, exposed structural steel, and standing seam metal roofing, the form of the karro building is visually tied to the sporting facilities celebrated within. the attractive geometrical façade and the building’s horizontal configuration give the building much of its contemporary appearance.

the four square central bays, each with a smoked glass curtain wall and crisscrossed with structural tie rods, create a significant impression for visitors arriving at the museum along mormon trek boulevard. this rigid steel framing with x-bracing was used around the building sections to reinforce the glass-walled structure. behind the massive windows, the three-story atrium is oriented toward the university’s finkbine golf course, taking full advantage of the scenic landscape during the day. at night, the light streaming from the building produces a stunning scene. a pair of concrete structures housing elevator shafts bookend the central bays and complement the building’s geometric shape.

building site creates unique challenges & provides “green” opportunities

detention pond controls the stormwater runoff for the university of iowa hall of fame building

native prairie plantings were used extensively around the museum.

the hall of fame building’s location is adjacent to a protected wetland and was developed with green architectural practices in mind. stormwater runoff is controlled by a detention pond that also maintains an ecological balance between plant and animal wildlife. landscaping with native prairie grasses and the use of drainage swales in the parking lot also minimize the hall of fame’s environmental impact.

while the design of the university of iowa athletics hall of fame is contemporary, it recalls the spectrum of athletic venues in both form and choice of materials. and it’s just one example of how the 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 team can rise to the occasion and develop cutting-edge structural designs. as a subsidiary of snyder & associates, the structural engineering professionals with 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 have the full weight of a proven team of environmental scientists, technicians, planners, and civil engineers backing every project.

southwest recreation complex improvements include the addition of multi-purpose athletic fields

iowa state university recreation services embarked on a large-scale improvement project at the university’s southwest recreation complex. a design team from snyder & associates played an integral role in this comprehensive, multi-year project. improvements included the removal of the existing track and field and the establishment of two fully-irrigated, dual-purpose rugby and soccer fields.

for the two regulation-size fields, the snyder & associates design team integrated a fully-automated irrigation system with a pumping station capable of watering three irrigation zones simultaneously. the automatic irrigation system saves hundreds of hours of labor and allows staff to spend time on other maintenance tasks. in addition to the irrigation system design, snyder & associates provided land 2022世界杯32强预选赛 services, grading design, site demolition plans, utility layout, and drainage plans for this extensive project.

facelift for baseball field highlights athletic complex upgrades

new signage marks the entryway to cap timm field.

while the multi-use fields’ project wrapped up in 2012, another opportunity at the southwest recreation complex arose in 2016 with the planned renovation of cap timm baseball field. named after one of iowa state’s longtime, legendary coaches, leroy “cap” timm, the field lacked many amenities needed for a collegiate-level facility. although baseball has not been an official sport at iowa state since 2001, a club team has been calling the field home for several years.

the multi-faceted improvements were designed to address the inadequacies of the facility while maintaining the charms of the existing field. snyder & associates coordinated with university staff during the implementation of many of the upgrades. a contingent of design students provided the labor in the construction of several pieces of the project, including the refurbishment of the dugouts and seating area. other project improvements included limestone retaining walls, a new backstop, plaza entrance, and a memorial to cap timm.

snyder & associates provided design and construction services for all of the field renovations. the field improvements addressed areas of poor drainage in several places and required the removal of the infield aggregate and a complete replacement with a properly sloped geometry. our team also added an irrigation system for cap timm field that is tied to the system previously installed for the rugby and soccer fields, reducing overall project cost.

isu students provided much of the labor for the project, drastically reducing the cost.

the upgrades at the southwest recreation complex provided the opportunity to repurpose and improve valuable space for the university. this welcoming and enjoyable facility created by our professional design crew has generated a renewed energy among the club teams and fans that use the facility. and much like the original cap timm field inspired generations of cyclone students, fans, and alumni, the promise of new memories in this updated facility is certainly on the horizon.

replacing a deteriorated tunnel network requires modern solutions
view inside old tunnel with pipes running through it

steam pipes run through an old section of utility tunnel on the university of iowa campus.

the labyrinth of utility networks running under the streets, homes, and businesses of iowa city has sections that date to the mid-1800s. several of these tunnels exist as conduits for steam pipes to heat buildings on the university of iowa campus. one such passage, known as the old capitol tunnel, runs along the east curb line of madison street. stretching from the universities power plant to the pentecrest, this tunnel is critical to the steam service on the east side of campus. it provides a path for condensate return to the power plant and completes a significant east campus steam loop providing operational reliability to the entire campus.

due to its susceptibility to flooding, a section of the old capitol tunnel between burlington street and washington street had deteriorated to a point that replacement was necessary. an engineering team with snyder & associates was brought on board to develop a solution that would meet the needs of a number of end-users. in lieu of dismantling and constructing a new tunnel section, our team developed a plan to replace the tunnel with a series of direct-buried pipes and concrete vaults spaced at appropriate intervals.

utility coordination & streetscape improvements

multi-color 3d modeling of pipe system

3-d modeling software was used to locate and track the multiple utilities in the reconstruction area.

in addition to the direct-bury steam/condensate utility replacement, this project also involves a high level of coordination with other university, city, and franchise utilities along the madison street corridor. there are numerous locations where the proposed direct-bury replacement piping crosses existing water, chilled water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, electrical and communication duct banks, and lighting circuits. to coordinate this highly complex environment, 3-d modeling software was used by our engineering team to map the utility structures and plan the necessary relocations as the project progressed.

this project also includes a streetscape component aimed at restoring the surface features following the utility construction. the streetscape features include plantings, upgraded sidewalks and crosswalks, and other amenities targeted to the college students, such as convenient bike parking and multiple waste receptacles. improvements to transit facilities, including bus stops and shelters, as well as safety improvements within the adjacent seamans center are also part of the project scope.

a high degree of coordination is necessary to formulate a construction phasing and traffic control plan that accommodates the construction activities while considering the needs of building users, transit mobility, the general 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 , and other construction projects occurring within the area. this complex, snyder & associates-designed project is currently underway with substantial completion targeted for the late summer of 2021.

recreational tennis & pickleball courts thriving in parks & school districts //m.dicovercards.com/projects/recreational-tennis-pickleball-courts-thriving-in-parks-school-districts/ //m.dicovercards.com/projects/recreational-tennis-pickleball-courts-thriving-in-parks-school-districts/#respond mon, 09 jun 2025 09:03:19 +0000 //m.dicovercards.com/project/recreational-tennis-pickleball-courts-thriving-in-parks-school-districts/ the team of landscape architects at snyder & associates has been designing tennis facilities for many years. tennis courts remain as one of the top draws in many parks, sports complexes, and school districts.

an evolution of tennis court surfaces

much like the materials used to make tennis rackets have changed over the years from wood to graphite, titanium, and other lightweight materials, so has the playing surface of the court itself. originally, grass and clay were the predominant court materials, but for the majority of recreational courts found in parks and sports complexes, asphalt (and to a lesser extent, concrete) often with an acrylic coating, is the go-to surface for durability and long life.

the landscape team at snyder & associates has been designing stand-alone tennis facilities (and as a piece of a park master plan) for many years. even as the popularity of other outdoor recreational opportunities has grown, tennis courts remain as one of the top draws in many parks, sports complexes, and school districts. and because the surfaces for tennis and its companion sport, pickleball, are similar, communities are increasingly requesting tennis courts with dual markings and adjustable nets to render the courts multi-use.

durable & professional results with seasoned sports field designers

outdoor tennis courts are typically constructed on asphalt surfaces with several surface coatings to choose from. engaging an experienced sports field design team, however, is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when considering adding or upgrading an existing tennis court facility.

achieving a professional result is so much more than simply creating a flat slab and adding nets. at a minimum, courts need to have the proper slope and adequate drainage for proper use. if these two critical components aren’t designed correctly, courts can be too steep, or worse, develop standing water after inclement weather. either of these issues will degrade the user experience.

choosing the best surface coating for your unique situation is another decision that a professional sports field design team can help make. numerous coatings are available depending on the variables of your court’s location. most surface coatings are acrylic-based and designed especially for coating asphalt. for outdoor courts, coatings are textured with a smooth and rounded, non-aggressive silica sand. this provides a slip-free surface in wet and dry conditions. options also exist to regulate the amount of cushion in the surface coating to help reduce player fatigue.

project sampling of snyder & associates-designed courts & sports complexes

doanes park

doanes park complex

in 2013, snyder & associates was approached by leaders from the pleasant hill parks & recreation department to design several new amenities for doanes park, including a new multi-use tennis and pickleball facility. this project called for three regulation tennis courts with markings for pickleball and tennis on each court. the design included all grading work, an asphalt surface and all-weather coating, fences, and dual-purpose nets.

these expansive park improvements added to a robust offering of ball fields, playground areas, and soccer fields that were designed by our landscape architects, as well, and provide first-rate recreational opportunities for the surrounding neighborhoods. through various 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 meetings and working with pleasant hill city staff and other stakeholder groups, our designers were able to understand the priorities and budgets of the various groups to accomplish numerous improvements over the past three years.

haines park & village park

people playing tennis on a sunny day

the two new courts in this altoona park are marked for tennis and pickleball use.

a similar project in altoona saw the removal and replacement of two tennis courts in village park and two courts in haines park. dual markings for tennis and pickleball were added to the courts in both parks, as well. the altoona parks & recreation department commissioned our team to design and oversee this project which included four regulation tennis courts, a new asphalt surface and all-weather coating, nets, and 10’ tall black vinyl coated fencing. site adjustments were necessary to accommodate the regulation size courts.

at one location, buried foundations discovered during construction posed a unique challenge to the plan. our design team immediately stepped in to create a fair solution between the contractor and the city to keep this project moving forward.

north polk community school district

when the north polk community school district’s new high school opened in 2013, a tennis court facility was not allowed for in the building funds. unfortunately, this prevented the district from being able to host home tennis meets for their student-athletes. when the funds became available, the school district turned to snyder & associates to design an athletic facility that not only provided first-class amenities but also included ample and comfortable accommodations for spectators.

this project included the construction and installation of six brand new, regulation tennis courts, complete with concrete walkways and expansive bleacher pads. the courts are an asphalt surface with an all-weather coating and included posts, nets, fencing, and perimeter gating. stormwater detention was also created and additional electrical service and site restoration were completed after the courts were constructed.

mercer park

dozens of people mid-game on pickle ball courts

dedicated tennis and pickleball courts are the highlights of iowa city’s mercer park.

the iowa city parks & recreation department went in a different direction for their project in mercer park. an existing six tennis court complex was converted to retain three full-size tennis courts and add eight pickleball courts. snyder & associates professionals evaluated the current athletic courts for resurfacing and expansion needs. our sports field design team then developed a plan that included new asphalt, partial fencing, posts, nets, resurfacing, and striping.

the demand in the iowa city area for amenities like this had been strong for many years and mimics a nationwide popularity trend for the sport of tennis. whether you’re community or organization is looking to convert existing tennis courts, or design a new sports facility from scratch, snyder & associates has years of experience designing tennis and pickleball facilities that meet our client’s customized needs.

college campus roadway reconstruction improves access

morrill road is a one-way street that winds through the iowa state university central campus in ames, iowa. the corridor is adjacent to several significant campus buildings, including the library, beardshear hall, and morrill hall. morrill hall has the distinction of being listed on the national register of historic places. morrill road was originally constructed of concrete in the mid-1920s and had undergone numerous rehabilitation efforts and overlays over the years. by 2008, the pavement was beyond its design life and needed replacement in order to continue servicing the multiple modes of traffic that use the corridor, including a high number of pedestrians and bicyclists.

morrill road project requires complete street solutions to address unique challenges

at the request of isu officials, snyder & associates completed a corridor study with the primary goal of creating a “complete street” design in a campus setting. the existing use of the roadway consisted of one-way vehicle traffic, including numerous cyride buses passing along the corridor. two-way bicycle traffic shared one, narrow lane, creating a less-than-ideal situation. also, the heavy, student pedestrian traffic along the route needed to be a chief concern for the new design.

in addition, several special situations had to be taken into consideration during the design and construction of the project, including:

  • the need to maintain several pedestrian crossings during construction to allow full access through campus.
  • maintaining the current level of available parking spaces along the corridor to meet the high-priority parking needs.
  • minimizing any disruption to a major communications duct bank that ran the length of the corridor and the reconstruction of an electrical vault had to remain energized during the project.
  • the need for updated lighting along the corridor.

new crossings were designed to accommodate a high volume of pedestrian traffic.

design expertise creates a better campus experience

the final design created by snyder & associates maintained the one-way vehicle traffic, but added a one-way, contra-flow bicycle lane for northbound bike traffic, greatly improving bicycle safety. the width of the adjacent sidewalks was increased and an additional walkway was constructed to accommodate the high volume of pedestrian traffic. the extra walkway was designed to help minimize pedestrian crossings. as needed, three pedestrian crossings remained open during the entire construction process.

parking along the corridor was also greatly improved in the final design. it not only maintained the number of parking stalls by using a combination of parallel and diagonal parking spaces, the new design also relocated several spaces which opened up the view in front of beardshear hall. the alignment of the roadway was designed to minimize the disruption of the communications duct running the length of the corridor. this also helped to address the reconstruction of the electrical vault. crews were able to keep it energized at all times throughout the project.

as part of the study, snyder & associates provided iowa state university a photometric analysis for various lighting options within the corridor. the university chose to replace the existing lights with new, decorative poles and led fixtures.

additional improvements decrease future costs

snyder & associates advanced a developmental specification, subsequently approved by the iowa dot, for the use of a high build, waterborne traffic paint for all pavement markings. the pavement markings also included pavement grooving to extend the life of the markings. additionally, the overall width of the roadway was reduced from 24′ to 20′. due to this decrease in hard surface area, the amount of stormwater piping and intakes were minimized. both of these features incorporated by our firm greatly reduced future maintenance costs for the university.

funding assistance provided by snyder & associates

in addition to the normal services provided by our firm for this project, which included the initial topographic survey and full-time construction oversight, snyder & associates also developed a concept statement for the university to acquire iowa dot institutional roads funding that helped pay for the project. due to the amount of construction required on the morrill road project and critical time constraints, work began during the spring semester. the road was opened to traffic one week prior to the following fall semester.
